The Lord of Darkness, also known as the Dark Lord or simply Darkness, is the master of the underworld and the main antagonist of the 1985 dark fantasy film Legend; he was portrayed by Tim Curry.

Biography

Backstory

Little is known about the Lord of Darkness. What is known is that the world was once a place of perpetual night, ruled over by him but when Light was born, he and his minions retreated beneath the earth. At some point during Darkness’ rule, wicked men came to his castle to make sacrifices to him. The Lord of Darkness resides in the Great Tree which is filled with all types of strange beasts and nightmarish horrors including giants, demons and goblins. As the ruler of darkness, his weakness is sunlight and any object of light.

Legend

He orders his most evil goblin Blix, to kill the two unicorns, the source of light in the mortal world so that it will enter a neverending age of night and become his kingdom once more. His incompetent minions however, only succeed in killing one unicorn by severing its horn. With the other unicorn still in the world, dawn is still able to rise so Darkness resolves to capture the other unicorn however his plans are complicated when he falls in love with Princess Lili, a pure woman whose beauty has captivated him while she is trapped within his domain. He speaks to his father (who is presumably Satan) and asks what to do with her. His father’s disembodied voice emanates from a huge fireplace, instructing Darkness to turn Lily to his side through any means necessary.

As he lures her into his chamber, Darkness charms Lili with an enchanted black dress, and as she dances, the dress merges with her. At the same time, the Lord Of Darkness comes through a mirror to meet her, in his true form. During this, Lili’s beloved, Jack, Jack’s friend Gump and their companions enter the Great Tree, undetected and overhear the brief “talk” between Lili and Darkness as he reveals his plan to plunge the world into eternal night and that Sunshine is what can destroy him.

She tells him that she will be his, if she gets to kill the last unicorn herself.

During the ensuing “Dark Ceremony” that will signal an apocalyptic ice age with the sacrificed blood of the unicorn, Darkness prepares to sacrifice the last unicorn before the gates of the dark void that surrounds the world however Lili breaks the chain holding the unicorn and it manages to escape. Angrily Darkness knocks her unconscious and Jack reveals himself and attacks Darkness before he attempts to kill her. The two warriors engage in a final battle as they sword duel each other.

Finding himself outmatched, Jack grabs the horn of a murdered unicorn and stabs Darkness through the stomach with it. As the sun rises, Jack’s companions use the mirrors to reflect the sunshine, channeling its rays into the Lord of Darkness’s lair. Darkness was able to survive the daylight shining on him by holding onto the unicorn horn, during which he taunted Jack that he could never defeat him as, but when Jack knocked the unicorn horn from his hand, the light sent him hurtling into space where he exploded into stars. However just before he explodes, he taunts Jack a final time by saying that light cannot exist without darkness.

In the U.S. version of the movie his laughter is heard before the ending credits, implying that he was right about light and dark. This does not occur in the original or Director’s Cut version of the movie, in which he is most likely dead.

Personality

The Lord of Darkness is evil yet charismatic. He shows a strangely human side in his attraction to Princess Lili. He is captivated by her purity and innocence which stand in stark contrast to his own dark soul yet he is also greatly amused by the idea of corrupting her innocence. A cruel sadist, he seems almost aroused by the prospect of watching Lili sacrifice the unicorn.

Although Darkness believes himself to be in love with Lili, in all likelihood, he merely lusts after her. Nevertheless, he offers her his heart and states that he wishes to spend eternity with her. Darkness’ true passionate nature is alluded to by the terrifying rages that he will fly into whenever he is defied or thwarted, though he usually conducts himself with an aura of amused indifference and cold calculation.

He presents Lili with a magnificent, if somewhat disturbing feast of fine food and wine and gives her beautiful jewelry along with a magnificent gown, showing a cultured and sophisticated side to his personality. Like most archetypal villains, his pride and arrogance lead to his downfall. He is contemptuous of most people and things, describing goodness as “disgusting”, referring to Jack as a “little boy” and holding his minions in disdain. When Lili flatters his ego, pretending to be charmed by him and offering to kill the unicorn, he readily believes her.

Appearance

The Lord of the Darkness could change his form, but he was always huge. When he first appears he has dark blue skin, long, sharp, glowing leather claws, two enormous black horns, sharp teeth, a long, pointed chin, cloven hooves and glowing, yellow snake-like eyes. In his second appearance, he was a hooded figure, hovering in the air, wearing long, flowing, ragged robes, his face invisible. His final form is the same as his first but with blood-red skin. In this form he wore a black cape along with black trousers. In promotional images for the film, he is often shown holding a staff however he never displays this in the film.

Powers and Abilities

In addition to his considerable physical strength, the Lord of Darkness can shoot fireballs out of his fingertips and create illusions. At one point in the film, he enters the room by stepping through a mirror, leaving it intact, suggesting that he has teleportation abilities and can manipulate matter.

He is a formidable swordsman and is capable of charming or intimidating people into doing what he wants, making him a master of psychological manipulation, alluded to by his statement that he can influence people through dreams which he claims to be his “specialty”. The Lord of Darkness also has shape-shifting abilities, assuming three different yet similar forms over the course of the film. In one of his forms, he shows the ability to fly.

Legend is a 1985 American epic dark fantasy adventure film directed and initiated by Ridley Scott and starring Tom Cruise, Mia Sara, Tim Curry, David Bennent, Alice Playten, Billy Barty, Cork Hubbert, and Annabelle Lanyon. The film revolves around Jack, a pure being who must stop the Lord of Darkness who plots to cover the world with eternal night.

Although not a commercial success when first released, it won the British Society of Cinematographers Award for Best Cinematography in 1985 for cinematographer Alex Thomson, as well as being nominated for multiple awards: Oscar for Best Makeup; Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films Saturn Award for Best Makeup; BAFTA Awards for Best Costume Design, Best Makeup Artist, Best Special Visual Effects; DVD Exclusive Awards; and Young Artist Awards. Since its premiere and the subsequent release of the unrated Director’s Cut, the film has become a cult classic.

PLOT SUMMARY

In order to cast the world into eternal night, the Lord of Darkness sends the goblin Blix to kill the unicorns in the forest near his castle and bring him their horns. Told by Darkness that the best bait is Innocence, Blix and his colleagues Pox and Blunder follow Princess Lili as she visits her forest-dwelling paramour, Jack in the Green. There Jack teaches Lili to speak to animals, then takes her blindfolded to a forest stream where he senses the unicorns will appear. When Lili holds out her hand to touch the stallion, Blix shoots him with a poison dart from his blowpipe and the unicorns flee. Jack is angry, but Lili laughs off his concern and issues a challenge by throwing her ring into a pond, declaring she will marry whomever finds it. While Jack dives in after the ring, the goblins track down the poisoned stallion and sever his alicorn, causing winter to descend. Lili runs off in terror, and Jack is barely able to break through the surface of the now-frozen pond.

Lili takes refuge in the cottage of a peasant family that is now frozen in time. While there, Lili sees the goblins test the alicorn’s magic powers and overhears how she was the bait in their slaying of the stallion. She follows the goblins to a rendezvous with Darkness, who tells them the world cannot be cast into eternal night as long as the surviving mare still lives. Blunder unsuccessfully tries using the alicorn to overthrow Darkness and is sent into the castle’s dungeon. Meanwhile, Jack, accompanied by the forest elf Honeythorn Gump, the fairy Oona, and the dwarves Brown Tom and Screwball, finds the mare mourning the lifeless stallion. Lamenting over his role in their current predicament, Jack apologizes to the mare, who communicates to him that the alicorn must be recovered and returned to the stallion by a great hero. Deciding Jack is that hero, the group leaves Brown Tom to guard the unicorns while Jack and the others retrieve a hidden cache of ancient weapons and armor. In their absence, Lili warns Brown Tom of the goblins coming back to kill the mare. He is then incapacitated by the goblins, who capture both Lili and the mare.

Upon returning, Jack and his group make their way to Darkness’ castle. On the way, they are attacked by a swamp hag named Meg Mucklebones, but Jack defeats her by flattering her appearance and then decapitating her. At the castle, Jack’s group falls into an underground prison cell, where they encounter Blunder, who is revealed to be a fairy gone astray, before he is dragged off by an ogre to be baked into a pie. Oona uses her magic to escape their cell and retrieves the keys to free the others.

Meanwhile, as Lili roams the castle seeking warmth and escape, a dark, dancing entity appears to tempt and turn her into a gothic version of herself. Darkness orchestrated this to claim her as his bride, and seemingly seduced, she agrees to wed him on condition that she will be the one to kill the mare in the upcoming ritual. Overhearing their conversation, Jack and Gump learn Darkness can be destroyed by daylight. After saving Blunder, the group takes the ogres’ giant metal platters as makeshift mirrors to reflect sunlight into the chamber where the mare is to be sacrificed.

As the ritual begins, Lili tries to free the mare, but Darkness casts onto her a spell of sleep. Jack’s group redirects the setting sun with the platters as he fights Darkness, finally wounding him with the stallion’s alicorn right before the redirected sunlight shines into the room, blasting Darkness to the edge of the eternal void. Darkness warns them that because evil lurks in all beings, he will never truly be vanquished. Wavering in doubt, Jack finally severs the hands of Darkness, thus expelling him into the void. Gump then returns the stallion to life by magically reattaching its alicorn. With the stallion reunited with the mare, winter suddenly ends. Jack retrieves Lili’s ring from the pond and places it on her finger, waking her from the spell.

Alternate endings

There are three different versions of the film’s conclusion:

In the Director’s Cut, Lili wakes with Jack trying to convince her she was merely dreaming, but she is ultimately unconvinced. They confess their true love for each other, but realize they live in two different lifestyles, which causes Lili to request continuing a merely platonic relationship. Jack, happy with this request for the first time, accepts. Lili returns to her home to assume her responsibilities, promising to visit him again. Jack happily runs off into the sunset, hailed by the forest fairies and the revived unicorns.

In the American theatrical version, Jack and Lili assure each other of their love and watch the unicorns reunite, and they run off into the sunset together, hailed by the forest fairies and the unicorns. Darkness watches them from the void, laughing.

The European version also ends with both Jack and Lili running off into the sunset, but without Darkness’s final appearance.

Timothy James Curry (born 19 April 1946) is an English-American actor and singer. He rose to prominence for his portrayal of Dr. Frank-N-Furter in the film The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975), reprising the role he had originated in the 1973 London and 1974 Los Angeles musical stage productions of The Rocky Horror Show.

Curry’s other stage work includes various roles in the original West End production of Hair, Tristan Tzara in the 1975 West End and Broadway productions of Travesties, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in the 1980 Broadway production of Amadeus, Alan Swann in the Broadway production of My Favourite Year, and King Arthur in Broadway and West End productions of Spamalot from 2005 to 2007. His theatre accolades include three Tony Award nominations and two Laurence Olivier Award nominations.

Curry received further acclaim for his film and television roles, including Rooster Hannigan in the film adaptation of Annie (1982), Darkness in Legend (1985), Wadsworth in Clue (1985), Pennywise in the miniseries It (1990), the Concierge in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992), Cardinal Richelieu in The Three Musketeers (1993), and Long John Silver in Muppet Treasure Island (1996). He has also gained acclaim for his voice acting roles, including his Daytime Emmy Award-winning performance as Captain Hook on Peter Pan & the Pirates (1990–1991), Hexxus in FernGully: The Last Rainforest (1992), Sir Nigel Thornberry on The Wild Thornberrys (1998–2004), and Chancellor Palpatine / Darth Sidious on Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2012–2014).

As a singer, Curry has released three rock-focused studio albums: Read My Lips (1978), Fearless (1979), and Simplicity (1981).

Film

In 1985, Curry starred in the fantasy film Legend as The Lord of Darkness. Director Ridley Scott cast Curry in the film after watching him in Rocky Horror, thinking he was ideal to play the role of Darkness. It took five and a half hours to apply the makeup needed for Darkness onto Curry and at the end of the day, he would spend an hour in a bath in order to liquefy the soluble spirit gum.

William Reinhold “Gatz” Hjortsberg (February 23, 1941 – April 22, 2017) was an American novelist and screenwriter, known for his originality and for writing the screenplay of the film Legend.

His novel Falling Angel was the basis for the film Angel Heart (1987). The novel was adapted into an opera in 2015, composed by J. Mark Scearce with a libretto by Lucy Thurber.

His 2015 novel Mañana is a thriller set in Mexico.

Hjortsberg the only child of a Swedish restaurateur father and a Swiss mother. He attended Dartmouth College, the Yale School of Drama (where he met Thomas McGuane), and was a Stegner Fellow at Stanford University. He was married three times, and had a son and a daughter. He died of pancreatic cancer.

Sir Ridley Scott (born 30 November 1937) is an English film director and producer. Best known for directing films in the science fiction and historical drama genres, his work is known for its atmospheric and highly concentrated visual style. Scott has received many accolades throughout his career, including the BAFTA Fellowship for lifetime achievement from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts in 2018. In 2003, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for services to the British film industry. He was inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame in 2007, and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2011.

An alumnus of the Royal College of Art in London, Scott began his career in television as a designer and director before moving into advertising, where he honed his filmmaking skills by making mini-films for television commercials. He made his debut as a film director with The Duellists (1977) and gained wider recognition with his next film, Alien (1979). Three years later he would direct Blade Runner, which Scott calls his “most complete and personal film”. Though his films range widely in setting and period, they frequently showcase memorable imagery of urban environments, spanning 2nd-century Rome in Gladiator (2000), 12th-century Jerusalem in Kingdom of Heaven (2005), Medieval England in Robin Hood (2010), Ancient Memphis in Exodus: Gods and Kings (2014), contemporary Mogadishu in Black Hawk Down (2001), or the futuristic cityscapes of Blade Runner and different planets in Alien, Prometheus (2012), The Martian (2015) and Alien: Covenant (2017). Several of his films are also known for their strong female characters, such as Thelma & Louise (1991).

Scott has been nominated for three Academy Awards for Directing, which he received for Thelma & Louise, Gladiator and Black Hawk Down. Gladiator won the Academy Award for Best Picture, and he received a nomination in the same category for The Martian. In 1995, both Scott and his brother Tony received a British Academy Film Award for Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema. In a 2004 BBC poll, Scott was ranked 10 on the list of most influential people in British culture.

Career (1980s)

In 1985, Scott directed Legend, a fantasy film produced by Arnon Milchan. Scott decided to create a “once upon a time” tale set in a world of princesses, unicorns and goblins, filming almost entirely inside the studio. Scott had a forest set built on the 007 Stage at Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire, with trees 60 feet high and trunks 30 feet in diameter. In the final stages of filming, the forest set was destroyed by fire; Jerry Goldsmith’s original score was used for European release, but replaced in North America with a score by Tangerine Dream. I was somewhat surprised by these comments, because I just assumed that it was common knowledge that the Winter Solstice has been a part of pagan and Satanic rituals for many thousands of years now, celebrated at the same time of the year that Christians celebrate Christmas, and is certainly not something that is disputed or hidden from those who participate in it.

And just like websites selling gifts to celebrate the Christmas Holiday with ordering instructions to get your gifts before the Christmas Holiday, so too the Satanic Temple has ordering instructions to receive Satanic gifts before the Solstice Holiday:

So when Julie writes “It points to complete ignorance of what is in your world,” she is the one who is actually “ignorant” because Satan is promoted everywhere in OUR world.

Christian Parents Upset Over After School Satan Clubs

Earlier this month (December, 2022) parents in the city of Chesapeake, Virginia, drew “national attention” because they were upset that The Satanic Temple was establishing an After School Satan Club (ASSC) for kids at a local public school.

The city of Chesapeake has recently drawn national attention as the center of a firestorm sweeping the southeastern Virginia community after The Satanic Temple has attempted to establish an After School Satan Club (ASSC) for kids at the local B.M. Williams Primary School.

Aspen Nolette, a local parent and founder of Chesapeake Parents for Freedom, said the ASSC has caused an “uproar” in her community and that parents are increasingly wearied by what is going on in public schools.

“People are extremely upset, they’re extremely disturbed, I think,” Nolette told Fox News Digital. “In the nation right now, you’ve got boys attempting to go into girls’ bathrooms. You saw what happened in Loudoun County, Virginia, and the assault that happened there because of that. You’ve got pornographic books and graphic novels in our schools that parents are extremely upset about because we have laws about distributing pornography to children.”

“And now you’ve got After School Satan Clubs. From what I’ve seen, and I’ve been involved in this for a couple of years, parents are at their wits’ end,” Nolette added. “The Satan clubs seem to be where they drew the line.”

Representatives of The Satanic Temple, however, claim that they do not teach religion (nor distribute pornography), but that they teach “science, critical thinking, creative arts, and good works for the community.”

ASSC exists to provide a safe and inclusive alternative to the religious clubs that use threats of eternal damnation to convert school children to their belief system. Unlike our counterparts, who publicly measure their success in young children’s “professions of faith,” the After School Satan Club program focuses on science, critical thinking, creative arts, and good works for the community. While engaged in all of these activities, we want clubgoers to have a good time.

When a similar controversy over the Satan After School Programs was happening earlier this year at a public school in Illinois, Tucker Carlson had one of the Satanic Temple representatives on his show.

I don’t know what you think after watching this clip, but I think Tucker Carlson acted like a first class jerk.

From the expressions on his face, to his insulting comments “You know as well as I do….”, to constantly cutting off his “guest” in mid-sentence, I think Lucien Greaves came across as the kinder, more rationale person in this interview.

But more than that, Greaves is correct when it comes to the law! The U.S. Constitution as well as case law gives them just as much legal right to setup clubs in public schools as the Evangelical Christian groups do.

“Freedom of Speech” and religion is not Freedom of Speech if it does not apply to everyone, and Christians need to wake up and realize this.

If you don’t want Satanic Clubs in your local school district, then pressure your School Boards to ban ALL religious clubs, including Evangelical clubs, from public schools. Why do you need a “right” to setup your Christian clubs on the property of public schools? Set them up in your churches!

Of course this ignores the larger issue as to why you are handing over your children to be “educated” by the State with their propaganda to begin with.

Once you do that, you’ve already lost your children, at least spiritually and morally, and if you don’t comply with school mandates, you could also lose them physically when the Child Welfare police show up to your door one day to explain why they are not coming home from school, but have been placed into Foster Care where you will now potentially fight for YEARS trying to get them back, if you ever do.

Even though the Satanic Temple claims they do not teach religion in their after school clubs, at the very least, they are teaching children to respect the name “Satan” as well as all the satanic images that used to be hidden in our culture, but are now brazenly advertised out in the open.

As we have previously published, one place where children have been exposed to Satanism for decades now, is in the hidden messages of the Disney corporation, which was founded by Walt Disney, himself a 33rd degree Freemason. See:

But even Disney now is openly promoting the name “Satan” as well as satanic values. I actually saw this in the Russian media in my newsfeed:

Disney has sparked a Twitstorm after a clip of child actors spelling out “We Love You Satan” went viral.

Twitter users were outraged at the scene from a new show on Disney+, the entertainment giant’s TV streaming service.

The video is a clip of a scene from ‘The Santa Clauses’, a spin-off from the long-running series of comedy films starring Tim Allen — ironically known for his conservative political views — who returns as the reluctant Father Christmas.

The little elves, played by children, scream when Santa points out their spelling mistake, and quickly correct it.

If this “mistake” had happened while filming, obviously it would not have made the final cut, so this was clearly intentional.

As I have reported numerous times, it doesn’t matter if your own belief system believes in Satan or not. Because the Globalists who control the financial world, politics, and the entertainment industry, clearly do.

Premise

Jack Burditt is an American producer and screenwriter who has worked on television shows like Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Frasier, 30 Rock, Last Man Standing, Modern Family, and The Mindy Project. He won two Emmy awards for his work on Frasier and three as an Executive Producer on 30 Rock.

Biography

Burditt is the son of the late writer and producer George Burditt and Joyce Burditt. He has one brother, Paul, and one sister, Ellen.

He worked as a writer on 30 Rock and was nominated for the Writers Guild of America Award for Best Comedy Series at the February 2009 ceremony for his work on the third season.

Burditt created the comedy Last Man Standing, which premiered in fall 2011 on ABC. The show was moved to Fox in its seventh season.

In January 2022, it was announced that a limited series that would serve as a legacy-sequel to The Santa Clause films was in development, with Tim Allen reprising his role in addition to serving as executive producer. Initially given the working title of “The Clauses”, the project was conceptualized with intent for a streaming release exclusive to Disney+. Jack Burditt serves as showrunner and executive producer, while Jason Winer is a director in addition to serving as an executive producer.

According to Allen, “It originally had a lot of otherworldly characters, and ghosts, and goblins. I said no, this is Christ-mas. Its Christ-mas. It literally is a religious holiday. We don’t have to blow trumpets, but I do want you to acknowledge it. That’s what this is about. If you want to get into Santa Claus, you’re gonna have to go back to history, and it’s all about religion.” On December 14, 2022, The Santa Clauses was renewed for a second season, with Tim Allen and Elizabeth Mitchell set to return.

Walter Elias Disney (December 5, 1901–December 15, 1966) was an American entrepreneur, animator, writer, voice actor, and film producer. A pioneer of the American animation industry, he introduced several developments in the production of cartoons. As a film producer, he holds the record for most Academy Awards earned by an individual, having won 22 Oscars from 59 nominations. He was presented with two Golden Globe Special Achievement Awards and an Emmy Award, among other honors. Several of his films are included in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress.

Born in Chicago in 1901, Disney developed an early interest in drawing. He took art classes as a boy and got a job as a commercial illustrator at the age of 18. He moved to California in the early 1920s and set up the Disney Brothers Studio with his brother Roy. With Ub Iwerks, he developed the character Mickey Mouse in 1928, his first highly popular success; he also provided the voice for his creation in the early years. As the studio grew, he became more adventurous, introducing synchronized sound, full-color three-strip Technicolor, feature-length cartoons and technical developments in cameras. The results, seen in features such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937), Pinocchio, Fantasia (both 1940), Dumbo (1941), and Bambi (1942), furthered the development of animated film. New animated and live-action films followed after World War II, including the critically successful Cinderella (1950) and Mary Poppins (1964), the latter of which received five Academy Awards.

In the 1950s, Disney expanded into the amusement park industry, and in July 1955 he opened Disneyland in Anaheim, California. To fund the project he diversified into television programs, such as Walt Disney’s Disneyland and The Mickey Mouse Club. He was also involved in planning the 1959 Moscow Fair, the 1960 Winter Olympics, and the 1964 New York World’s Fair. In 1965, he began development of another theme park, Disney World, the heart of which was to be a new type of city, the “Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow” (EPCOT). Disney was a heavy smoker throughout his life and died of lung cancer in December 1966 before either the park or the EPCOT project were completed.

Disney was a shy, self-deprecating and insecure man in private but adopted a warm and outgoing public persona. He had high standards and high expectations of those with whom he worked. Although there have been accusations that he was racist or anti-Semitic, they have been contradicted by many who knew him. His reputation changed in the years after his death, from a purveyor of homely patriotic values to a representative of American imperialism. He nevertheless remains an important figure in the history of animation and in the cultural history of the United States, where he is considered a national cultural icon. His film work continues to be shown and adapted; his namesake studio and company maintain high standards in their production of popular entertainment, and the Disney theme parks have grown in size and number to attract visitors in several countries.

The Beast was a Demon imprisoned in the centre of Krop Tor. He claimed to have existed before the creation of the Doctor’s universe. He claimed to be the Devil, or rather “the truth behind the myth”, having woven his image as the Horned Beast into every culture. After an encounter with the Tenth Doctor which ended with the creature’s apparent destruction, the Doctor went back and forth on whether he acknowledged the Beast as truly being the Devil, though he admitted to the possibility of the brute fact that various religions’ image of an evil horned figure may have been inspired by the Beast.

Nature

The Beast’s physical body resembled a massive humanoid with crimson skin, two large, ram-like horns (one of which was broken half way) projecting from its head and a corpse-like face. (TV: The Satan Pit)

The Beast could manifest itself through electronic media, including communication devices, computer voices, and hologram viewers. Its mind could leave its body and possess a single hive mind of the Ood collectively and/or a single human individually. It had the power of telepathy and, through a host, telekinesis strong enough to shatter reinforced glass. Possession of a human subject affected the host’s skin and eyes, causing strange markings to appear all over their face and body with their eyes turning red; as well as their vocal cords, allowing them to speak at different pitches simultaneously. Possessed Ood also had glowing red eyes, though this has been seen on other occasions when strong telepathy was present. The Beast could also project fire from his mouth, as could its possessed hosts. Its hosts could also physically survive in a vacuum. (TV: The Impossible Planet)

Origins

The Beast claimed to have existed before the universe, a claim the Tenth Doctor found troubling to accept or consider as he believed nothing could have existed before the universe.

The Beast had been at battle with the Disciples of the Light. The Disciples, who themselves existed before the universe, bound it in giant chains and confined it to a pit in the centre of Krop Tor, a planet in orbit around the black hole K37 Gem 5, (TV: The Satan Pit) on 27 October. (PROSE: Time Traveller’s Diary) If it ever tried to escape, the field holding Krop Tor in orbit would collapse and the planet would be sucked into the black hole, taking the Beast with it. Despite this, the Beast claimed that it was the basis of the Devil-figure in all religions. The Doctor believed this to be because the Beast’s existence seeped into the subconscious of all sentient beings. Deities the Beast inspired included the Kaled God of War and the “horned beast” for Draconia, Vel Consadine and Dæmos. (TV: The Satan Pit)

Personality

The Beast had a narcissistic personality, constantly exalting itself and its achievements and referring to itself by various grandiose epithets, even the third person. It was also exceedingly arrogant, dismissing all other creatures as its inferiors and believing itself invincible, immortal and utterly supreme. The Beast was also quite emphatic about its own importance in the mindsets of other life forms, asserting itself as all of the devils in all religions, “the truth behind the myth”.

In addition to being an arrogant narcissist, the Beast was also a ferocious killer. It had an extremely manipulative and cunning nature, and was proud of the acts it set into motion, laughing when the Tenth Doctor deduced its plans to escape Krop Tor. It revelled in its own triumphs, grinning gleefully while on the surface of Krop Tor in Toby’s body, and gloating about its freedom as the Pit opened for it.

The Beast would sadistically prey on people’s fears and guilty feelings to shake them and leave them feeling vulnerable. It was sadistic enough to taunt Toby with its presence before possessing him, convincing him that if he looked at the Beast he would die. Later on, when he possessed Toby, he cruelly asked Mr. Jefferson if his wife had ever forgiven him, before mockingly telling him she never did, clearly reading the discomfort and horror in the man’s reaction.

Able to see into the future, the Beast used this precognitive insight against others, foretelling twisted interpretations of what would befall the members of the Walker Expedition, with enough honesty preserved in his statements to keep them plagued with dread.

The Beast’s cruelty, sadism and egomaniacal nature was its own undoing, as it was so caught up with gloating about its own supremacy, immortality and omnipresence in the minds of other beings, that it wasn’t ready when Rose Tyler sent it flying into the black hole. “The Satan Pit” is the ninth episode of the second series of the British science fiction television series Doctor Who, which was first broadcast on 10 June 2006. It is the second part of a two-part story. The first part, “The Impossible Planet”, was broadcast on 3 June.

The episode is set on Krop Tor, a planet orbiting a black hole. In the episode, the alien time traveller the Tenth Doctor (David Tennant) climbs down a deep pit in which the Beast (Gabriel Woolf) is kept prisoner. At the same time, the Doctor’s travelling companion Rose Tyler (Billie Piper) and a human expedition team try to escape the planet after the Beast possesses the Ood on the base.

Story Notes

This episode was shown in the week of 6/6/06. It followed a wave of Devil-related stories in the media, including the release of The Omen.

PLOT SUMMARY

The Tenth Doctor and science officer Ida investigate a pit under a recently opened trap door deep below the planet Krop Tor. In the sanctuary base, Rose and three members of the crew, Jefferson, Danny, and Toby, flee from the advancing Ood, who are possessed by the Beast. Toby appears to be no longer possessed. As the Doctor and Ida prepare to return to the base, the Beast communicates with the Doctor and the rest of the crew through the Ood and explains that he was sealed in the pit before the universe began. The Beast demoralises the Doctor, Rose, and the crew, telling them that they will die. The lift cable snaps shortly after, trapping Ida and the Doctor ten miles underground with limited air.

With the commander Zach cornered in the base control room by Ood, Rose and the rest of the crew are forced into the maintenance tunnel. Jefferson sacrifices his life to save the crew. Rose, Danny, and Toby go on to incapacitate the Ood by disrupting the telepathic field that keeps them functioning. After the group reunites with Zach, Zach knocks out the unwilling Rose and takes her with them to board the escape rocket and leave the planet.

Meanwhile, the Doctor and Ida use the lift cable to explore the pit, although the Doctor finds nothing but darkness far below. He then chooses to detach himself and fall, landing at the bottom thanks to an air cushion, and finds that he can breathe. The Doctor finds the physical form of the Beast. He quickly deduces from the unintelligible grunts coming from the Beast that its consciousness has already escaped and that Krop Tor was designed as the perfect prison for the Beast: its jailers devised two nearby jars as a failsafe, since their destruction would cause the planet to plunge into the black hole. The Doctor smashes the jars anyway to destroy the Beast. As the planet falls out of orbit, the Doctor stumbles across his TARDIS.

The rocket is also pulled towards the black hole, and Toby reveals he is still possessed. Rose takes Zach’s bolt gun and shoots out the rocket’s front window, unhooking Toby’s safety harness to jettison him into space. Only having time for one trip, the Doctor rescues Ida just as her air supply runs out and tows the rocket to safety with the TARDIS.

Series 2 of Doctor Who ran from 18 November 2005 to 8 July 2006 . It starred David Tennant as the Tenth Doctor, Billie Piper as Rose Tyler and Noel Clarke as Mickey Smith. The regular series was preceded by The Christmas Invasion, opened with New Earth and concluded with Doomsday.

Doctor Who (2005) – Series 2 Opening Titles

Overview

It consisted of twelve stories and fifteen episodes. It was David Tennant’s first full series as the Tenth Doctor, wrote out Billie Piper’s Rose Tyler and briefly introduced the character of Donna Noble. Significantly, series 2 also served as a mild advertisement for the then-forthcoming Torchwood television series, since its main story arc established the origins of the Torchwood Institute.

Unlike series 1, the main production team did not feature Mal Young. Instead, Russell T Davies and Julie Gardner carried on as executive producers and Phil Collinson continued in his role as the main producer — an arrangement that persisted through to series 4’s Journey’s End.

Everything from the 2005 Children in Need Special to Doomsday was a part of the series 2 production block — though the “regular season” is typically characterised as the stories from New Earth to Doomsday.

Production

The main story arc for the season was the Torchwood Institute, referenced only twice previously, which served to lead up to the final episodes as well as the Torchwood spinoff series. A secondary arc dealt with the development of the love story between Rose and the Doctor. Series 2 saw the return of the Cybermen to television and the return of companions Sarah Jane Smith and K9. Both were last seen (notwithstanding independent, fan-made productions) in 1983; their successful return sparked the commissioning of a second spin-off series, The Sarah Jane Adventures, for CBBC. The series 2 finale saw the introduction of Donna Noble.

The Tenth Doctor is an incarnation of the Doctor, the protagonist of the BBC science fiction television franchise Doctor Who. He is played by David Tennant in three series as well as nine specials. As with previous incarnations of the Doctor, the character has also appeared in other Doctor Who spin-offs. Tennant’s time as the Tenth Doctor is highly regarded among fans of the show and is generally regarded as one of the most iconic incarnations of the character, often ranked alongside Tom Baker’s Fourth Doctor.

Within the series’ narrative, the Doctor is a centuries-old alien Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey who travels in time and space in the TARDIS, frequently with companions. At the end of life, the Doctor regenerates; as a result, the physical appearance and personality of the Doctor changes. Tennant’s portrayal of the Doctor is of an outwardly charismatic and charming adventurer whose likable and easygoing attitude can quickly turn to righteous fury when provoked.

This incarnation’s companions include working-class shop assistant Rose Tyler (Billie Piper), who had travelled with his previous incarnation, medical student Martha Jones (Freema Agyeman), and fiery temp worker Donna Noble (Catherine Tate). He eventually parts ways with them all by the end of the 2008 series finale, “Journey’s End”, after which he attempts to travel alone for the duration of the 2008–2010 specials before being accompanied by Donna’s grandfather Wilfred Mott (Bernard Cribbins) on his final adventure in “The End of Time”.

Series 2 of Doctor Who ran from 18 November 2005 to 8 July 2006 . It starred David Tennant as the Tenth Doctor, Billie Piper as Rose Tyler and Noel Clarke as Mickey Smith. The regular series was preceded by The Christmas Invasion, opened with New Earth and concluded with Doomsday.

It consisted of twelve stories and fifteen episodes. It was David Tennant’s first full series as the Tenth Doctor, wrote out Billie Piper’s Rose Tyler and briefly introduced the character of Donna Noble. Significantly, series 2 also served as a mild advertisement for the then-forthcoming Torchwood television series, since its main story arc established the origins of the Torchwood Institute.

Unlike series 1, the main production team did not feature Mal Young. Instead, Russell T Davies and Julie Gardner carried on as executive producers and Phil Collinson continued in his role as the main producer — an arrangement that persisted through to series 4’s Journey’s End.

Everything from the 2005 Children in Need Special to Doomsday was a part of the series 2 production block — though the “regular season” is typically characterised as the stories from New Earth to Doomsday.

Series 2 (2006)

The main story arc for the season was the Torchwood Institute, referenced only twice previously, which served to lead up to the final episodes as well as the Torchwood spinoff series. A secondary arc dealt with the development of the love story between Rose and the Doctor. Series 2 saw the return of the Cybermen to television and the return of companions Sarah Jane Smith and K9. Both were last seen (notwithstanding independent, fan-made productions) in 1983; their successful return sparked the commissioning of a second spin-off series, The Sarah Jane Adventures, for CBBC. The series 2 finale saw the introduction of Donna Noble.

The TARDIS (acronym for “Time And Relative Dimension(s) In Space”) is a fictional hybrid of the time machine and spacecraft that appears in the British science fiction television series Doctor Who and its various spin-offs. Its exterior appearance mimics a police box, an obsolete type of telephone kiosk that was once commonly seen on streets in Britain. Paradoxically, its interior is shown as being much larger than its exterior, commonly described as being “bigger on the inside“.

Due to the significance of Doctor Who in popular British culture, the shape of the police box is now more strongly associated with the TARDIS than its real-world inspiration. The name and design of the TARDIS is a registered trademark of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), despite the fact that the design was originally created by the Metropolitan Police Service.

Name

TARDIS is an acronym of “Time And Relative Dimension(s) in Space”. The word “Dimension” is alternatively rendered in the plural. The acronym was explained in the first episode of the show, An Unearthly Child (1963), in which the Doctor’s granddaughter claims to have made it up herself.

Generally, “TARDIS” is written in all uppercase letters, but may also be written in title case as “Tardis”. The word “Tardis” first appeared in print in the Christmas 1963 edition of Radio Times, which refers to “the space-time ship Tardis“, and this publication has often italicised it to connote a ship’s name.

Description

In the fictional universe of the Doctor Who television show, TARDISes are space and time-travel vehicles of the Time Lords, beings from the planet Gallifrey. Although many TARDISes exist and are sometimes seen on-screen, the television show mainly features a single TARDIS used by the show’s protagonist, a Time Lord who goes by the name of the Doctor.

TARDISes are built with a “chameleon circuit”, a type of camouflage technology that changes the exterior form of the ship to blend into the environment of whatever time or place it lands in. The Doctor’s TARDIS always resembles a 1960s London police box, an object that was very common in Britain at the time of the show’s first broadcast. Owing to a malfunction in the chameleon circuit after the events of the first episode of the show, An Unearthly Child, the Doctor’s TARDIS is stuck in the same disguise for a long period. The Doctor has attempted to repair the chameleon circuit, unsuccessfully in Logopolis (1981) and with only temporary success in Attack of the Cybermen (1985). In the 2005 television story “Boom Town”, the Doctor reveals that he has stopped trying to repair the circuit as he has become fond of its appearance. The other TARDISes that appear in the series have chameleon circuits that are fully functional.

While the exterior is of limited size, the TARDIS is famously “bigger on the inside”. Behind the police box doors lies a large control room, at the centre of which is a hexagonal console for operating the TARDIS. In the middle of the console is a moving tubular device called a time rotor. The presence of a physically larger space contained within the police box is explained as “dimensionally transcendental”, with the interior being a whole separate dimension containing an infinite number of rooms, corridors and storage spaces, all of which can change their appearance and configuration. The TARDIS also allows the Doctor and others to communicate with people who speak languages other than their own, as well as turn all written languages to English. The “translation circuit” (occasionally called the “translation matrix”) was first explored in “The Masque of Mandragora” (1976), as the Doctor explained to his companion, Sarah Jane, “Well, I’ve taken you to some strange places before and you’ve never asked how you understood the local language. It’s a Time Lord’s gift I allow you to share. But tonight when you asked me how you understood Italian, I realized your mind had been taken over.” The translation circuit has also been explored in comparison with real-world machine translation, with researchers Mark Halley and Lynne Bowker concluding that “when it comes to the science of translation technology, Doctor Who gets it wrong more often than it gets it right. However, perhaps we can forgive the artistic license if we recognize that, as in other science fiction works, the presentation of some type of ubiquitous translation tool is necessary to explain to the audience how people from other countries, time periods, and even other worlds, can understand each other and indeed appear to speak (mostly) flawless English.”

The TARDIS also has other special abilities: it can produce a large, invisible air bubble around its exterior that allows occupants to survive in an area that lacks oxygen as long as they are close to it and in one episode, it can create a bridge tunnel that occupants can use to cross over to out-of-reach areas such as another ship. The TARDIS is also shown to be strong enough to tow other ships and planets and can even withstand black holes.

Matthew David Jones (born 5 August 1968) is a British television screenwriter and television producer, who has worked on a variety of popular drama programmes for several television networks in the UK.

Career

His big break in television came in 1999, when he was the script editor on Red Production Company’s controversial drama series Queer as Folk, screened on Channel 4. The same year, he script edited another Channel 4 drama produced by Red, the anthology series Love in the 21st Century, for which he also wrote one episode.

The following year he worked as a writer on two series for Granada Television, their popular children’s drama Children’s Ward and flagship soap opera Coronation Street, both aired on the ITV network. Returning to Red, in 2000 he script edited the first series of the British Academy Television Award-winning drama Clocking Off, and in 2001 he gained his first credit as a producer when he both wrote and produced the one-off drama Now You See Her, starring Amanda Holden, for the satellite channel Sky One.

In 2003 he began working for Company Pictures, creating, writing and producing the crime drama Serious and Organised, starring Martin Kemp and again screened on ITV. Moving up to become an Executive Producer, he worked on another Company series for ITV, the Second World War-set POW. In 2004 he was an Executive Producer on Company’s critically acclaimed drama series Shameless, screened on Channel 4, and became the show’s producer for the second season in 2005, the year in which the programme won a British Academy Television Award for Best Drama Series.

In April 2005, Jones was announced as one of the writers working on the second season of the BBC revival of hugely popular science-fiction series Doctor Who, fulfilling a childhood ambition to work on the programme of which he had long been a fan. His episodes, a two-parter with the titles “The Impossible Planet” and “The Satan Pit”, were broadcast on 3 and 10 June 2006.

Jones also wrote the seventh episode of the second series of Doctor Who spin-off series Torchwood, called “Dead Man Walking”.

In 2012 Jones wrote the second episode of the BBC Four TV series Dirk Gently based on the novels by Douglas Adams. in 2017, he contributed episodes to Stan Lee’s Lucky Man, and in 2020, to legal drama The Split.

James Strong is a British television and film director and writer, best known for his work on Broadchurch for which he was BAFTA-nominated for Best Director Fiction 2015. He trained at Granada TV and has directed episodes of the shows Holby City and Doctors, as well as seven episodes of Doctor Who and two episodes of its spin-off series Torchwood. His work on the Doctor Who episode “Voyage of the Damned” won him a BAFTA Cymru award for Best Director in 2008.

In 2007, he directed the autobiographical documentary Elton John: Me, Myself & I and in 2008 he directed three episodes of Bonekickers. He then directed Hunted and Best Possible Taste: The Kenny Everett Story and Silent Witness in 2010 followed by the feature film United and Downton Abbey in 2011. He was lead director and associate producer on Broadchurch, which won six BAFTAs including Best Drama and for which he was nominated for BAFTA Best Director Fiction.

Strong followed this with work on Series 2 of Broadchurch, the US remake Gracepoint in 2013 and other US pilots, including Kingmakers for ABC in 2015 and Drew in 2016. He also directed episodes of the Stephen King adaptation and J. J. Abrams produced 11.22.63.

He directed and executive produced “Liar” (2017) for ITV and AMC and the critically acclaimed mini-series Vanity Fair (2018) for ITV and Amazon Studios. He was also set to direct a J.R.R. Tolkien biopic entitled Middle Earth (later re-titled Tolkien), but dropped out for unknown reasons.

Julie Ann Gardner MBE (born 4 June 1969) is a Welsh television producer. Her most prominent work has been serving as executive producer on the 2005 revival of Doctor Who and its spin-off shows Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures. She worked on Doctor Who from 2003 to 2009 before moving to Los Angeles to work at BBC Worldwide. In 2015, Gardner co-founded the production company Bad Wolf, best known for the BBC TV series His Dark Materials, on which Gardner also serves as an executive producer.

Television career

Her first job was as a producer’s secretary on the second production block of the acclaimed BBC Two drama serial Our Friends in the North. Subsequently, she became a script reader and then a script editor, before working as a producer on BBC dramas such as Silent Witness and The Mrs Bradley Mysteries.

In 2000, Gardner began working as a Development Producer at London Weekend Television. She produced dramas including Me and Mrs. Jones and an updated version of Othello written by Andrew Davies and starring Eamonn Walker and Christopher Eccleston (in the Iago role). While at LWT, Gardner began working with Welsh writer Russell T Davies on the period drama Casanova.

In 2003, Gardner returned to the BBC as Head of Drama for BBC Wales, bringing Davies’ Casanova project with her. Gardner’s first assignment from BBC Head of Drama Jane Tranter was to head up the revival of Doctor Who. Gardner immediately contacted Davies (who had previously expressed an interest in writing and producing Doctor Who) and began working with him on bringing the programme back to British screens. The new series of Doctor Who debuted in March 2005, to critical and popular acclaim.

Gardner was the BBC’s representative in the production of the political romantic comedy The Girl in the Café (2005), written by Richard Curtis in conjunction with the Make Poverty History campaign. Other network dramas commissioned by Gardner at BBC Wales included the multiple personality disorder drama May 33rd (2004); domestic abuse-themed one-off Dad (2005); courtroom reconstruction The Chatterley Affair (2006) and the time travel police series Life on Mars (2006–2007), produced independently by Kudos Film & Television.

Gardner and Davies also oversaw two Doctor Who spin-offs: Torchwood, an adult (post-watershed) science fiction drama aired on BBC Three and BBC Two, and The Sarah Jane Adventures, a children’s fantasy thriller aired on BBC One and CBBC.

In September 2006, it was announced that Gardner would succeed Jane Tranter as the overall Controller of Drama Commissioning at BBC Television, following Tranter’s promotion to the new “Head of Fiction” role. However, Gardner remained in her position at BBC Wales, performing the two jobs simultaneously, until 2009; her roles at BBC Wales and with Doctor Who were then assumed by producer Piers Wenger.

Gardner received credit for an increase in drama being made in Wales; in 2007, Cardiff-born writer Andrew Davies called her “the best thing to happen to Welsh drama. Ever.”

In March 2009, it was announced that Gardner was to join the staff of Los Angeles-based BBC Worldwide America, as executive producer in charge of scripted projects.

It was announced in late 2009 that Gardner was five months pregnant and her first child, Huckleberry, fathered by Doctor Who sound recordist Julian Howarth, was born in early summer 2010.

In 2015, Gardner cofounded the production company Bad Wolf with Jane Tranter. Bad Wolf has since produced numerous TV series, including The Night Of, His Dark Materials, and Industry.

Stephen Russell Davies OBE FRSL (born 27 April 1963), better known as Russell T Davies, is a Welsh screenwriter and television producer whose works include Queer as Folk, The Second Coming, Casanova, the 2005 revival of the BBC One science fiction franchise Doctor Who, Cucumber, A Very English Scandal, Years and Years, It’s a Sin and Nolly.

Born in Swansea, Davies had aspirations as a comic artist before focusing on being a playwright and screenwriter. After graduating from Oxford University, he joined the BBC’s children’s department, CBBC, in 1985 on a part-time basis and held various positions, which included creating two series, Dark Season and Century Falls. He eventually left the BBC for Granada Television, and in 1994 began writing adult television drama. His early scripts generally explored concepts of religion and sexuality among various backdrops: Revelations was a soap opera about organised religion and featured a lesbian vicar; Springhill was a soap drama about a Catholic family in contemporary Liverpool; The Grand explored society’s opinion of subjects such as prostitution, abortion and homosexuality during the interwar period; and Queer as Folk recreated his experiences in the Manchester gay scene. His work in the 2000s included Bob & Rose, which portrayed a gay man who fell in love with a woman; The Second Coming, which focused on the second coming and deicide of Jesus Christ from a mostly non-religious point of view; Mine All Mine, a comedy about a family who discover they own the entire city of Swansea; and Casanova, an adaptation of the complete memoirs of Venetian adventurer Giacomo Casanova.

Following the show’s sixteen-year hiatus, Davies revived and ran Doctor Who for the period between 2005 and 2010, with Christopher Eccleston and later David Tennant in the title role. Davies’ tenure as executive producer of the show saw a surge in popularity which led to the production of two spin-off series, Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures, and the revival of Saturday prime-time dramas as a profitable venture for production companies. Davies was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 2008 for services to drama, which coincided with the announcement he would step down from Doctor Who as the show’s executive producer with his final script, “The End of Time” (2009–2010). Davies moved to Los Angeles in 2009, where he oversaw production of Torchwood: Miracle Day and the fifth and final series of The Sarah Jane Adventures. Davies returned as Doctor Who showrunner in October 2022 after the departure of Chris Chibnall; the first episodes of his second tenure will be the show’s sixtieth anniversary specials in 2023.

After his partner developed cancer in late 2011, Davies returned to the UK. He co-created the CBBC science fantasy drama Wizards vs Aliens, and created Cucumber, a Channel 4 series about middle-aged gay men in the Manchester gay scene; Banana, an E4 series about young LGBT people in the Cucumber universe; and Tofu, an All 4 documentary series which discussed LGBT issues. Davies’ later work for BBC One in the 2010s include A Midsummer Night’s Dream, a television film adaptation of William Shakespeare’s play; A Very English Scandal, a miniseries adaptation of John Preston’s novel of the same name; and Years and Years, a drama series which follows a Manchester family affected by political, economic, and technological changes to Britain over 15 years. Davies returned to Channel 4 for a third time in 2021 as creator of It’s a Sin, a semi-autobiographical drama about the HIV/AIDS crisis of the 1980s and 1990s.

Doctor Who (2005–2010)

Since watching First Doctor’s (William Hartnell) regeneration into the Second Doctor (Patrick Troughton) at the end of the 1966 serial The Tenth Planet, Davies had “fallen in love” with the show and, by the mid-1970s, he was regularly writing reviews of broadcast serials in his diary. His favourite writer and childhood hero was Robert Holmes; during his career, he has complimented the creative use of BBC studios to create “terror and claustrophobia” for Holmes’s 1975 script The Ark in Space—his favourite serial from the original series—and has opined that the first episode of The Talons of Weng-Chiang (1977) featured “the best dialogue ever written; it’s up there with Dennis Potter”. His screenwriting career also began with a Doctor Who submission; in 1987, he submitted a spec script set on an intergalactic news aggregator and broadcaster, which was rejected by script editor Andrew Cartmel, who suggested that he should write a more prosaic story about “a man who is worried about his mortgage, his marriage, [and] his dog”. The script was eventually retooled and transmitted as “The Long Game” in 2005.

During the late 1990s, Davies lobbied the BBC to revive the show from its hiatus and reached the discussion stages in late 1998 and early 2002. His proposals would update the show to be better suited for a 21st-century audience: the series would be recorded on film instead of videotape; the length of each episode would double from twenty-five minutes to fifty; episodes would primarily take place on Earth, in the style of the Third Doctor (Jon Pertwee) UNIT episodes; and Davies would remove “excess baggage” from the mythology such as Gallifrey and the Time Lords. Davies’ pitch competed against Dan Freedman’s proposed retool as a fantasy series, Matthew Graham’s gothic horror-styled reboot, and the Mark Gatiss—Gareth Roberts—Clayton Hickman pitch which made the Doctor the audience surrogate character, instead of his companions. Davies also took cues from American fantasy television series such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Smallville, most notably Buffy‘s concepts of series-long story arcs and the “Big Bad”.

In August 2003, the BBC had resolved the legal confusion over production rights which had surfaced as a result of the jointly produced Universal Studios–BBC–20th Century Fox 1996 Doctor Who film, and the Controller of BBC One Lorraine Heggessey and Controller of Drama Commissioning Jane Tranter approached Gardner and Davies to create a revival of the series to air in a primetime slot on Saturday nights, as part of their plan to devolve production to its regional bases. By mid-September, they accepted the deal to produce the series alongside Casanova.

Davies’ pitch for Doctor Who was the first one he wrote voluntarily; previously, he opted to outline concepts of shows to commissioning executives and offer to write the pilot episode because he felt a pitch made him “feel like [he’s] killing the work”. The fifteen-page pitch outlined a Doctor who was “your best friend; someone you want to be with all the time”, the 19-year-old Rose Tyler (Billie Piper) as a “perfect match” for the new Doctor, avoidance of the 40-year back story “except for the good bits”, the retention of the TARDIS, sonic screwdriver, and Daleks, removal of the Time Lords, and a greater focus on humanity. His pitch was submitted for the first production meeting in December 2003 and a series of thirteen episodes was obtained by pressure from BBC Worldwide and a workable budget from Julie Gardner.

The first new series of Doctor Who featured eight scripts by Davies; the remainder were allocated to experienced dramatists and writers for the show’s ancillary releases: Steven Moffat penned a two-episode story, and Mark Gatiss, Robert Shearman, and Paul Cornell each wrote one script. Davies also approached his old friend Paul Abbott and Harry Potter author J. K. Rowling to write for the series; both declined due to existing commitments. Shortly after he secured writers for the show, Davies stated he had no intention of approaching writers from the old series; the only writer he would have wished to work with was Holmes, who died in May 1986.

By early 2004, the show had settled into a regular production cycle. Davies, Gardner, and BBC Controller of Continuing Drama Series Mal Young took posts as executive producers, and Phil Collinson, his old colleague from Granada, took the role of producer. Davies’ official position as showrunner combined the roles of head writer and executive producer and consisted of laying a skeletal plot for the entire series, holding “tone meetings” to correctly identify the tone of an episode, often described in one word—for example, the “tone word” for Moffat’s “The Empty Child” was “romantic”—and overseeing all aspects of production.

The production team was also tasked with finding a suitable actor for the role of the Doctor. Most notably, they approached film actor Hugh Grant and comedian Rowan Atkinson for the role. By the time Young suggested The Second Coming and Our Friends in the North actor Christopher Eccleston to Davies, Eccleston was one of three left in the running for the role: the other candidates are rumoured to have been Alan Davies and Bill Nighy. Eccleston created his own characteristics of his rendition of the Doctor based on Davies’ life, most notably, his catchphrase “Fantastic!”:

The show started filming in July 2004 on location in Cardiff for “Rose”. The start of filming created stress among the production team because of unseen circumstances: several scenes from the first block had to be re-shot because the original footage was unusable; the Slitheen prosthetics for “Aliens of London”, “World War Three”, and “Boom Town” were noticeably different from their computer-generated counterparts; and the BBC came to a gridlock in negotiations with the Terry Nation estate to secure the Daleks for the sixth episode of the series; Davies and episode writer Rob Shearman were forced to rework the script to feature another race, until Gardner was able to secure the rights a month later. After the first production block, which he described as “hitting a brick wall”, the show’s production was markedly eased as the crew familiarised themselves.

The first episode of the revived Doctor Who, “Rose”, aired on 26 March 2005 and received 10.8 million viewers and favourable critical reception. Four days after the transmission of “Rose”, Tranter approved a Christmas special and a second series. The press release was overshadowed by a leaked announcement that Christopher Eccleston would leave the role after one series; in response, David Tennant was announced as Eccleston’s replacement.

Tennant had been offered the role when he was watching a pre-transmission copy of Doctor Who with Davies and Gardner. Tennant initially believed the offer was a joke, but after he realised they were serious, he accepted the role and made his first appearance in the dénouement of “The Parting of the Ways”, the final episode of the first series. Doctor Who continued to be one of BBC’s flagship programmes throughout Davies’ tenure, and resulted in record sales of the show’s official magazine, an increase in spin-off novels, and the launch of the children’s magazine Doctor Who Adventures and toy sonic screwdrivers and Daleks. The show’s popularity ultimately led to a resurgence in family-orientated Saturday night drama; the ITV science-fiction series Primeval and the BBC historical dramas Robin Hood and Merlin were specifically designed for an early Saturday evening timeslot. Davies was also approached by the BBC to produce several spin-off series, eventually creating two: Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures.

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) is the national broadcaster of the United Kingdom, based at Broadcasting House in London, England. It is the world’s oldest national broadcaster, and the largest broadcaster in the world by number of employees, employing over 22,000 staff in total, of whom approximately 19,000 are in public-sector broadcasting.

Television Centre (TVC) is a building complex in White City, West London, that was the headquarters of BBC Television between 1960 and 2013. After a refurbishment, the complex reopened in 2017 with three studios in use for TV production, operated by BBC Studioworks. The first BBC staff moved into the Scenery Block in 1953, and the centre was officially opened on 29 June 1960. It is one of the most readily recognisable facilities of its type, having appeared as the backdrop for many BBC programmes. Parts of the building are Grade II listed, including the central ring and Studio 1.

Most of the BBC’s national television and radio news output came from Television Centre, and in later years most recorded television was output from the nearby Broadcast Centre at 201 Wood Lane, care of Red Bee Media. Live television events from studios and routing of national and international sporting events took place within Television Centre before being passed to the Broadcast Centre for transmission.

The building is 4 miles (6 kilometres) west of central London, in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham. The nearest Underground stations are White City on the Central Line and Wood Lane on the Circle and Hammersmith & City Lines.

Satan is a major character in the black comedy animated sitcom South Park and the central antagonist in the 1999 film South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut.

He is based on the Judeo-Christian-Islamic demon extraordinaire of the same name. He presides over Hell, is at war with Jesus and God and has also suffered from dependence on relationships.

Despite being the ruler of hell, Satan is sometimes depicted as an anti-villain or even a hero. This is due to his soft, sensitive and understanding nature that is commonly shown in the series and the movie.

He was voiced by Trey Parker.

History

Many of Satan’s appearances on South Park (as well as his role in the film South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut) focus on his romantic attachments, all of which so far have been homosexual. In the film, he is one of the two main antagonists alongside Saddam Hussein, though at the end of the film, he undergoes a change of heart, and calls off his attack upon Earth. In the beginning of the story, Satan is romantically involved with Saddam Hussein. As the plot of South Park progresses, Satan exiles Saddam after Saddam becomes too domineering. Satan has since had two other partners, Chris and Kevin (see below). Satan also has a rarely seen son named Damien, who, while never specifically labeled as the Antichrist, is based on the character from The Omen. Satan makes a cameo at the end of the current opening.

Satan has tried three times so far in the course of South Park‘s run to take over Earth: in the episodes “Damien” and “Best Friends Forever”, and also in the feature film South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut. All three attempts failed, with the last also leading to Satan’s breakup and out-of-anger murder of his then-boyfriend Saddam Hussein, although his attempt in “Damien” was fake — the real reason he did it was to get rich on the money that the townsfolk had bet on him.

Satan has been depicted in three romantic relationships. His most significant relationship was with Saddam Hussein in South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut. However, Saddam was emotionally abusive to the meek and emotionally dependent Satan, and was interested in Satan solely for sex and world domination than out of love. With some prompting from Kenny, Satan stands up to Saddam, casts him back down into hell, impaling him on a stalagmite, and calls off his invasion of Earth.

Saddam is seen again in “Do the Handicapped Go to Hell?”. By this time Satan has a new boyfriend named Chris, a passive milquetoast who avoids conflict and confrontation. Saddam asserts to Satan that Chris is not fit for Satan, who truly prefers rebellious troublemakers like Saddam himself, and after inviting Saddam to his hotel room, the conflicted Satan spends the night with him. Subsequently, Chris and Saddam began to kill each other repeatedly — appearing alive in Hell the next day — until Satan seeks God’s advice. God points out to Satan that Satan is too dependent on relationships, and needs to learn to develop his own sense of independence and self-worth, rather than choose partners who are bad for him. Satan decides to break up with both Saddam and Chris, and when Saddam refuses to acknowledge Satan’s wishes, Satan banishes Saddam to Heaven, which is populated entirely by Mormons.

In the 2005 episode “Best Friends Forever“, Satan has another boyfriend named Kevin, who acts as his advisor, and urges Satan along in his attempts to conquer the universe; however, when it is clear the battle is lost for them and the figure continues to press him, Satan breaks up with Kevin and dispatches him.

Satan returns in the “Cereal” arc of Season 22 after Manbearpig is revealed to be real and goes on a mass killing spree. He tells Stan, Kyle, Kenny and Cartman that someone made a deal with Manbearpig which is why he is wreaking havoc on the town. Cartman convinces Satan to help fight Manbearpig because “Humanity is doing his (Satan) work for him.” Satan agrees and fights Manbearpig, but he proves too powerful and is defeated and killed. His sacrifice and redemption grant Satan’s spirit to be accepted into Heaven.

Personality

Satan was the ruler of Hell, and he often found his way up to the town of South Park to carry out his nefarious, and occasionally harmless, schemes. He is openly homosexual. Despite being evil incarnate, he has a compassionate and vulnerable personality. He even has a change of heart in the movie, and becomes an anti-heroic figure. Although he may seem dark and evil at times, his darker moments are just acts, and he is genuinely a nice person.

South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut is a 1999 American adult computer-animated musical comedy film based on the animated sitcom South Park. The film was directed by series creator Trey Parker from a screenplay co-written with series co-creator Matt Stone and Pam Brady; and stars Parker, Stone, Mary Kay Bergman, and Isaac Hayes, all of whom reprise their roles from the series, with George Clooney, Eric Idle, and Mike Judge in supporting roles. The plot follows Stan, Kyle, Cartman, and Kenny as they sneak into an R-rated film starring the Canadian comedy duo Terrance and Phillip, after which they begin swearing. When the consequent moral panic culminates in the United States declaring war on Canada, Stan, Kyle and Cartman take it upon themselves to save Terrance and Phillip from execution, while Kenny tries to prevent a prophecy involving Satan and Saddam Hussein’s intent to conquer the world.

Primarily centered on themes of censorship and scapegoating, the film also parodies and satirizes the animated films of the Disney Renaissance, musicals such as Les Misérables, and controversies surrounding the series itself. The film also heavily satirizes the Motion Picture Association of America; during production, Parker and Stone disputed with the MPAA, which returned the film multiple times with an NC-17 rating due to its use of profanity. The film’s songs were written by Parker and Marc Shaiman, the latter of whom composed the score.

South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut premiered at Grauman’s Chinese Theater on June 23, 1999, and was released theatrically in North America the following week by Paramount Pictures, with Warner Bros. Pictures handling international distribution. The film received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised its story, soundtrack, humor and themes. Produced on a $21 million budget, it grossed $83.1 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing R-rated animated film until 2016. At the 72nd Academy Awards, the song “Blame Canada” was nominated for Best Original Song, but lost to Phil Collins’ “You’ll Be in My Heart” from Tarzan.

PLOT SUMMARY

One morning in South Park, Colorado, Stan Marsh, Kyle Broflovski and his adopted brother Ike, Eric Cartman, and Kenny McCormick visit the movie theater to see Terrance and Phillip’s R-rated film, Asses of Fire. After initially being denied tickets, the boys pay a homeless man to accompany them. After watching the film, the boys begin swearing constantly. Their friends are impressed and also see the film, except for Wendy Testaburger, who becomes acquainted with transfer student Gregory, to Stan’s jealousy.

When the children’s parents find out, they are forbidden from seeing the film again, but do so multiple times. As a bet with Cartman, Kenny sets his fart on fire, imitating a scene from the film; he accidentally immolates himself and is rushed to the hospital, where he dies from a botched heart transplant. Barred from Heaven, Kenny descends into Hell, wherein he encounters Satan and his abusive partner Saddam Hussein. Meanwhile, Kyle’s mother, Sheila, forms the Mothers Against Canada (M.A.C.) movement with other parents. Terrance and Phillip are arrested as war criminals; when the United States refuses to release them, Canada bombs the Baldwins in retaliation. The US declares war on Canada and arranges to have Terrance and Phillip executed during a USO show. After insulting Sheila, Cartman is implanted with a V-chip, which administers an electric shock whenever he swears.

Satan prophesies that the war is a sign of the apocalypse and upon Terrance and Phillip’s deaths, he will invade and conquer Earth. After failing to persuade Satan to abandon Saddam, Kenny’s ghost visits Cartman to warn him. Unable to reason with their mothers, Stan, Kyle, and Cartman form a resistance movement with their classmates to rescue Terrance and Phillip. At Gregory’s behest, they recruit the French-accented, misotheistic Cristophe, nicknamed “the Mole.” Kyle later hides Ike in their family’s attic as Canadians are sent to internment camps. After the boys infiltrate the show, Stan and Kyle attempt to stall the execution, while Cartman attempts to deactivate the alarm as the Mole prepares to secure Terrance and Phillip. However, Kenny’s ghost reappears before Cartman, who runs away in fear, forgetting to shut down the alarm. The Mole is discovered and fatally mauled by guard dogs.

The remaining boys try to warn their mothers about Satan’s prophecy, but are ignored as the execution commences. The execution is interrupted when the Canadian Army launches a surprise attack, resulting in a massive battle between the two armies. Cartman deactivates the electrical switch, allowing Terrance and Phillip to escape; the shock from the switch causes his V-chip to malfunction. Stan chases after them, but is knocked out in an explosion. Members of M.A.C., horrified at what they incited, decide to abandon their cause, with only Sheila remaining committed.

Stan reawakens before a sentient clitoris, who tells him to be self-confident to gain Wendy’s affection. Stan leads the others to Terrance and Phillip, whom the US Army have cornered. The children form a human shield as Kyle tries to reason with Sheila, faulting her for scapegoating others for his mistakes. While the soldiers begin to back down, Sheila refuses and shoots Terrance and Phillip dead, fulfilling Satan’s prophecy. Saddam usurps Satan and demands that everyone bow to him. When Saddam insults Cartman, the latter’s retort releases bolts of energy from his hands. Subsequently, Cartman engages in profanity-laden tirades to attack Saddam, who continues to verbally abuse Satan. Satan becomes enraged and throws Saddam back into Hell, where he is impaled on a stalagmite.

Grateful for Kenny’s support, Satan grants him one wish. Kenny wishes for everything to return to a pre-war state, and parts with his friends before disappearing. South Park is restored as the casualties, including Terrance and Phillip, are undone. As Americans and Canadians make peace, Sheila reconciles with Kyle, as does Wendy with Stan. For his sacrifice, Kenny is allowed entry into Heaven.

Randolph Severn “Trey” Parker III (born October 19, 1969) is an American actor, animator, filmmaker, and composer. He is known for co-creating South Park (since 1997) and The Book of Mormon (2011) with his creative partner Matt Stone. Parker was interested in film and music as a child and at high school and attended the University of Colorado Boulder, where he met Stone. The two collaborated on various short films. They also co-wrote and co-starred in the feature-length musical Cannibal! The Musical (1993).

Parker and Stone moved to Los Angeles and wrote their second film, Orgazmo (1997). Before the premiere of the film, South Park premiered on Comedy Central in August 1997. The duo possess full creative control of the show, and have produced music and video games based on it. A film based on the series, South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut (1999), received good reviews from both critics and fans. Parker went on to write, produce, direct, and star in the satirical action film Team America: World Police (2004), and, after several years of development, The Book of Mormon premiered on Broadway to good reviews.

Parker has received five Primetime Emmy Awards for his work on South Park, four Tony Awards and a Grammy Award for The Book of Mormon, and an Academy Award nomination for the song “Blame Canada” from the South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut movie, co-written with Marc Shaiman.

Bigger, Longer & Uncut and continued success

Parker and Stone signed a deal with Comedy Central in April 1998 that contracted the duo to producing South Park episodes until 1999, gave them a slice of the lucrative spinoff merchandising the show generated within its first year, as well as an unspecified seven-figure cash bonus to bring the show to the big screen, in theaters. During the time, the team was also busy writing the second and third seasons of the series, the former of which Parker and Stone later described as “disastrous”. As such, they figured the phenomenon would be over soon, and they decided to write a personal, fully committed musical. Parker and Stone fought with the MPAA to keep the film R-rated; for months the ratings board insisted on the more prohibitive NC-17. The film was only certified an R rating two weeks prior to its release, following contentious conversations between Parker/Stone, Rudin, and Paramount Pictures. Parker felt very overwhelmed and overworked during the production process of the film, especially between April and the film’s opening in late June. He admitted that press coverage, which proclaimed the end of South Park was near, bothered him. South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut opened in cinemas in June 1999 and received critical acclaim while grossing $83 million at the box office.

Parker and Stone continue to write, direct, and voice most characters on South Park. Over time, the show has adopted a unique production process, in which an entire episode is written, animated and broadcast in one week. Parker and Stone state that subjecting themselves to a one-week deadline creates more spontaneity amongst themselves in the creative process, which they feel results in a funnier show. Although initial reviews for the show were negative in reference to its crass humor, the series has received numerous accolades, including five Primetime Emmy Awards, a Peabody Award, and numerous inclusions in various publications’ lists of greatest television shows. Though its viewership is lower than it was at the height of its popularity in its earliest seasons, South Park remains one of the highest-rated series on Comedy Central. In 2012, South Park cut back from producing 14 episodes per year (seven in the spring and seven in the fall) to a single run of 10 episodes in the fall, to allow the duo to explore other projects the rest of the year. As of 2019 the show is renewed through 2022, when it will reach its twenty-sixth season. The show’s twenty-third season premiered on September 25, 2019.

South Park has continued, becoming an enterprise worth hundreds of millions of dollars. The franchise has also expanded to music and video games. Comedy Central released various albums, including Chef Aid: The South Park Album and Mr. Hankey’s Christmas Classics, in the late 1990s. The song “Chocolate Salty Balls” (as sung by the character Chef) was released as a single in the UK in 1998 to support the Chef Aid: The South Park Album and became a number one hit. Parker and Stone had little to do with the development of video games based on the series that were released at this time, but took full creative control of South Park: The Stick of Truth, a 2014 video game based on the series that received positive reviews and for which they shared (with Eric Fenstermaker) the 2014 Writing In A Comedy and Parker won the Performance in a Comedy, Supporting award by National Academy of Video Game Trade Reviewers (NAVGTR). Broadcast syndication rights to South Park were sold in 2003, and all episodes are available for free full-length on-demand legal streaming on the official South Park Studios website. In 2007, the duo, with the help of their lawyer, Kevin Morris, cut a 50–50 joint venture with Comedy Central on all revenue not related to television; this includes digital rights to South Park, as well as films, soundtracks, T-shirts and other merchandise, in a deal worth $75 million.

In August 2021, Parker and Stone signed a $900 million deal with ViacomCBS to renew the series for six additional series and 14 projects on Paramount+.

Comedy Central is an American basic cable channel owned by Paramount Global through its network division’s MTV Entertainment Group unit, based in Manhattan. The channel is geared towards young adults aged 18–34 and carries comedy programming in the form of both original, licensed, and syndicated series, stand-up comedy specials, and feature films. It is available to approximately 86.723 million households in the United States as of September 2018.

Since the early 2000s, Comedy Central has expanded globally with localized channels in Europe (including the UK), India, Southeast Asia, Latin America, Australia and New Zealand, Middle East, and Africa. The international channels are operated by Paramount International Networks.

1991–2000

The channel made a breakthrough when South Park premiered in 1997. Being one of the first major basic cable shows to carry the TV-MA rating for mature audiences, the show was considered too controversial to be picked up by any mainstream network; the Fox Broadcasting Company (known for The Simpsons) for example refused to pick up the series due to the over-the-top offensive content at the time. As word of mouth spread, the number of people who requested that Comedy Central should be added to their cable providers increased, and the channel became available in over 50% of American homes by 1998. But, by 1999, with the second cancellation of Mystery Science Theater 3000 (by then on the Sci-Fi Channel; Comedy Central removed the show in 1996), the channel was hemorrhaging viewers.

2000–2010

The success of South Park, despite its mature content, encouraged the network to continue to push the limits on adult language. Every late Friday (early Saturday morning) and Saturday night (early Sunday morning) at 1 am. ET, a movie, comedy special, or animated program is shown unedited for language as part of a block called the Secret Stash. It premiered on July 4, 2003, with the unedited cable television debut of South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut. Though no language is censored on the Secret Stash, most nudity in the programs is still edited out, except for limited nudity allowed in animated programs such as Drawn Together, and rear nudity.

Criticism

Comedy Central has been a target of criticism from some advocacy groups, including the Parents Television and Media Council. The PTC criticizes their programming not merely for mature content, but also for what they perceive as bigotry and blasphemy, The PTC has used their criticisms against Comedy Central for their support of the Family and Consumer Choice Act of 2007, which would allow American cable television subscribers to choose which channels they subscribe to and impose the same decency standards that are already in place on broadcast TV. The PTC has also persuaded some advertisers to lower their interest for the channel. PTC founder and former president L. Brent Bozell III said the channel has managed “to reach the top of its field in spite of – or, better put, because of – the network’s sheer lack of comedic talent” by its “extensive reliance on shocking or disgusting humor.”

THE SATANIC TEMPLE

The Satanic Temple, often abbreviated TST, is a nontheistic religious organization that is primarily based in the United States, with additional congregations in Canada, Australia, Finland, Germany and the United Kingdom. Co-founded by Lucien Greaves, the organization’s spokesperson, and Malcolm Jarry, the organization uses Satanic imagery to promote egalitarianism, social justice, and the separation of church and state, supporting their mission “to encourage benevolence and empathy [among all people].” The Satanic Temple has utilized satire, theatrical ploys, humor, and legal action in their public campaigns to “generate attention and prompt people to reevaluate fears and perceptions”, and to “highlight religious hypocrisy and encroachment on religious freedom.”

The Satanic Temple does not believe in a supernatural Satan; instead it employs the literary Satan as a metaphor to promote pragmatic skepticism, rational reciprocity, personal autonomy, and curiosity. Satan is thus used as a symbol representing “the eternal rebel” against arbitrary authority and social norms. Adherents generally refer to their religion as “Satanism” or “Modern Satanism”, while others refer to TST’s religion as Compassionate Satanism or Seven Tenet Satanism.

The organization’s participation in public affairs includes political actions as well as lobbying efforts, with a focus on exposing Christian privilege when it interferes with personal religious freedom. It considers marriage a religious sacrament that should be governed under the First Amendment’s protection of religious liberty which should prevail over state laws. Because the group regards inviolability of the body as a key doctrine, it also views all restrictions on abortion, including mandatory waiting periods, as an infringement on the rights of Satanists to practice their religion.

The Satanic Temple, often abbreviated TST, is a nontheistic religious organization that is primarily based in the United States, with additional congregations in Canada, Australia, Finland, Germany and the United Kingdom. Co-founded by Lucien Greaves, the organization’s spokesperson, and Malcolm Jarry, the organization uses Satanic imagery to promote egalitarianism, social justice, and the separation of church and state, supporting their mission “to encourage benevolence and empathy [among all people].” The Satanic Temple has utilized satire, theatrical ploys, humor, and legal action in their public campaigns to “generate attention and prompt people to reevaluate fears and perceptions”, and to “highlight religious hypocrisy and encroachment on religious freedom.”

The Satanic Temple does not believe in a supernatural Satan; instead it employs the literary Satan as a metaphor to promote pragmatic skepticism, rational reciprocity, personal autonomy, and curiosity. Satan is thus used as a symbol representing “the eternal rebel” against arbitrary authority and social norms. Adherents generally refer to their religion as “Satanism” or “Modern Satanism”, while others refer to TST’s religion as Compassionate Satanism or Seven Tenet Satanism.

The organization’s participation in public affairs includes political actions as well as lobbying efforts, with a focus on exposing Christian privilege when it interferes with personal religious freedom. It considers marriage a religious sacrament that should be governed under the First Amendment’s protection of religious liberty which should prevail over state laws. Because the group regards inviolability of the body as a key doctrine, it also views all restrictions on abortion, including mandatory waiting periods, as an infringement on the rights of Satanists to practice their religion.

SatanCon

On February 12, 2022, the Satanic Temple held their first SatanCon convention inside Saguaro Hotel in Scottsdale, Arizona. Outside the hotel, hundreds of Christians protested the convention holding crucifixes, crosses, and signs denouncing Satan. According to one report based on a tweet, at one point, police were forced to intervene at the protest after some Protestant and Catholic protesters started fighting against each other over their theological differences.

The Satanic Temple announced the celebration of its 10th anniversary at SatanCon 2023 from April 28-30, 2023 in downtown Boston, Massachusetts.

A group of Christians is pushing back against SatanCon 2023, an event scheduled to take place in downtown Boston that is being touted by The Satanic Temple as the “largest satanic gathering in history.”

Detractors say the temple is “using the supernatural” to manipulate people, though it bills itself as a nontheistic group that does not believe in the supernatural.

“We’ve been tracking these folks for a couple years now,” Dave Kubal, CEO of Intercessors for America, told Fox News Digital. His organization of “half a million prayer warriors” takes a three-pronged approach to resisting and exposing The Satanic Temple with “news, prayer and action.”

SatanCon 2023, which is scheduled April 28-30 in Boston, marks The Satanic Temple’s 10-year anniversary, according to its website. The theme of the gathering is “Hexennacht in Boston,” translated from German for “Witches’ Night,” which marks the ancient pagan holiday of May Eve.

Kubal noted how The Satanic Temple has chosen the locations for their two SatanCon events so far as retribution against politicians who would not allow them to offer satanic invocations at city events.

SatanCon 2023, which will include discussion panels, entertainment, satanic rituals, a satanic wedding chapel and a “satanic marketplace,” was dedicated to Democratic Boston Mayor Michelle Wu after the Temple was not allowed to deliver an invocation at Boston City Hall.

The Temple told Fox News Digital it supports the right to protest its event, but dismissed the accusations against it and doubled down on its status as a non-spiritual organization.

The group dedicated its 2022 conference in Scottsdale, Arizona to former Republican Mayor Jim Lane and former Republican Councilor Suzanne Klapp, who also denied a request to invoke Satan at a City Council meeting.

Kubal said his organization fasted and prayed against SatanCon in Scottsdale last year, claiming that the event “fizzled” and “their numbers were very small for all practical purposes.” This year, they are taking the same approach, but are also trying to raise awareness that The Satanic Temple is wading into legal battles about abortion in the wake of the Dobbs decision.

Citing its tenet that “one’s body is inviolable, subject to one’s own will alone,” The Satanic Temple has filed lawsuits on religious freedom grounds in states that limit abortion, claiming that abortion bans violate the rights of an “involuntarily pregnant woman” to engage in a “Satanic Abortion Ritual.”

“I think for the average American, that just kind of makes their skin crawl to think that somebody would abort a baby for religious ritual purposes,” Kubal said.

“So whether or not people believe in satanic power, the people that are a part of this absolutely do, and they attend this conference in an attempt to learn how to manipulate people using the supernatural. They cloak their activities using palatable words emphasizing science, using words like benevolence or justice.”

The Salem, Massachusetts-based Satanic Temple, which claims to have more than 1.5 million members worldwide, denies belief in a personal devil, saying its mission is “to encourage benevolence and empathy among all people, reject tyrannical authority, advocate practical common sense and justice, and be directed by the human conscience to undertake noble pursuits.”

John Ramirez, who spoke at an Intercessors for America event last year, is a former occultist whose book “Out of the Devil’s Cauldron: A Journey from Darkness to Light” detailed his account of leaving Santería after he was initiated when he was a boy. A mix of Roman Catholic teachings and occult spiritism, Santería emerged in Cuba during the 19th century and was banned in the country for decades.

Now an evangelist, Ramirez maintained to Fox News Digital that Satanists are messing with real forces despite what they claim, and likened people who do not believe in spiritual warfare to someone who does not believe in gravity before jumping out a window.

“These people are a bunch of jokes because this is how they trap people,” Ramirez said of The Satanic Temple and those like them. “I lived in the satanic kingdom for 25 years. I lived in the shadows of the demonic for 25 years. I would talk to Satan all day long, all night long.”

Ramirez claimed that when he was steeped in the occult, he would project his consciousness into the spiritual realm with the intention of cursing entire regions with “the highest levels of witchcraft.” Following a supernatural experience during which he said he experienced hell, he became a Christian.

“So these people tell you they’re a temple, they’re a religion, but they don’t serve Satan, which is all hogwash,” he said. “They do.”

“On the front door, they say, ‘We call ourselves Satanists, but we don’t serve Satan.’ But then that’s like a Christian saying, ‘I’m a Christian, but I don’t serve Jesus.’ How can you be a Christian not serving Jesus? Either you have one master, or you have the other.”

Ramirez claimed Satanists set up temples in various cities “so demons and spirits can work in the atmosphere of those regions to really bring destruction to the people.”

Ramirez said the influence of the demonic is becoming increasingly apparent in American culture. “We make Sodom and Gomorrah look like kindergarten,” he said. “We are darker by the minute. This society has lost its conscience of right from wrong. We don’t even blush anymore.”

“Whatever is right in people’s eyes, that’s what they do,” he added.

Michelle Wu (born January 14, 1985) is an American lawyer and politician serving as the mayor of Boston, Massachusetts since 2021. She is a member of the Democratic Party. The daughter of Taiwanese immigrants, she was the first Asian American woman to serve on the Boston City Council. She was first elected to the council in 2013 and served from 2014 to 2021, including a stint as council president from 2016 to 2018. Wu was elected mayor in 2021, winning with 64% of the vote, becoming the first woman, first person of color, and first Asian American elected to serve as the mayor of Boston.

While on the Boston City Council, Wu authored several ordinances that were been enacted. This included ordinances to prevent the city from contracting with health insurers that discriminate in their coverage against transgender individuals, protect wetlands, support adaption to climate change, enact a plastic bag ban, adopt Community Choice Aggregation, and provide paid parental leave to municipal employees. As a city councilor, Wu also partook in a successful effort to regulate short-term rentals.

An advocate for a municipal “Green New Deal”, Wu signed an ordinance to divest city investments from companies that derive more than 15 percent of their revenue from fossil fuels, tobacco products, or prison facilities. She also has announced plans for the city to spend $2 billion on school construction projects as part of the “Green New Deal” for the city’s public schools. As mayor, she has also taken actions related to increasing affordable housing in the city and taken actions related to the city’s COVID-19 policies. A supporter of fare-free public transportation, Wu has funded a three-year period of fare-free service on three MBTA bus routes, expanding on a single-route pilot program that had previously been started under Kim Janey’s preceding acting mayoralty.

Wu is considered a political progressive and a protégé of Elizabeth Warren. Warren was one of Wu’s professors in law school and Wu worked on Warren’s 2012 United States Senate campaign.

COVID-19 pandemic

Wu criticized some of Mayor Marty Walsh’s initiatives amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Wu specifically criticized some of Walsh’s COVID-19 initiative, which as the Boston Resiliency Fund and Racial Equity Fund, that solicited private sector donor funding, saying that “Philanthropy is wonderful” but that the government soliciting money from corporations and distributing it to nonprofits “creates a very disruptive and dangerous dynamic” with the effect of “distorting the political process.” Wu criticized Walsh over a lack of minority-owned businesses receiving emergency coronavirus-related contracts (less than 2% of the $12 million in such contracts issued prior to July 2020 went to Boston-located minority-owned businesses, with only one such business being among eighty businesses to receive such contracts per data the Walsh administration had provided).

Wu has called for the city to facilitate an “equitable recovery” from the pandemic, chairing City Council hearings on the issue in 2020.

In February 2021, Wu proposed legislation that would seek to create an equitable distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine in Boston by requiring that at least one vaccination site be established in each residential neighborhood. She also partnered with fellow city councilor Annissa Essaibi George to propose a measure that would provide paid leave to municipal employees who felt ill after receiving the vaccine.

In early August 2021, Wu criticized Acting Mayor Kim Janey for failing to commit to require city workers to be vaccinated against COVID-19. Wu supported a mandate for city workers, including public school employees, to be vaccinated. Fellow mayoral candidates John Barros and Essaibi George opposed this.

In August 2021, Wu voiced support for implementing a vaccine passport program, requiring proof-of-vaccination for indoor dining and other public indoor activities. Fellow mayoral candidate Andrea Campbell had, days before Wu, made similar calls for the city to put in place rules which would require that many businesses require patrons provide proof of vaccination.

In the late summer of 2021, Wu’s office compiled data that suggested that half of the city’s Restaurant Revitalization Fund money that had been allocated to restaurants was given to establishments in only three of the city’s 23 neighborhoods (Back Bay, Downtown Boston, and the Seaport District). It was noted that these were largely white and wealthy neighborhoods in comparison to the rest of the city. In June 2021, Wu expressed support for having a municipal eviction moratorium once the federal eviction moratorium expired.

COVID-19

In December 2021, Wu announced a city COVID-19 vaccine mandate. Under the mandate, people ages 12 and older, in order to enter indoor public venues (bars, restaurants, gyms, theaters, and sports venues) in Boston, would be required to show proof of at least their first COVID-19 vaccine dose by January 15, 2022, and of full vaccination by February 15, 2022. The mandate promoted opposition, and in an interview with Boston Public Radio, Wu stated that she received racist messages in response to vaccine requirements. Some opponents circulated false rumors about Wu being hospitalized for panic attacks while in office. On February 19, 2022, Wu announced that the city would end its proof-of-vaccine mandate for public places with immediate effect.

The Wu administration also required city employees to be vaccinated against COVID-19 (with exceptions for employees with medical reasons and religious objectors), and about 94% of city employees were in compliance with that requirement by late January 2022. Wu extended the deadline for city employees to comply. Some public employee unions fought the mandate in court, arguing that the mandate rules should be subject to collective bargaining. A Massachusetts Appeals Court judge sided with the unions, blocking the city worker mandate. Wu faced persistent demonstrations outside of her house protesting her COVID measures.

Penny Lane (born March 6, 1978) is an American independent filmmaker, known for her documentary films. Her humor and unconventional approach to the documentary form, including the use of archival Super 8 footage and YouTube videos, have earned her critical acclaim.

Lane is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Life and career

Lane was born in Lynn, Massachusetts. She received a BA in American Culture and Media Studies at Vassar College in 2001 and an MFA in Integrated Electronic Arts at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 2005. She has taught film, video and new media art at Bard College, Hampshire College, Williams College and Colgate University.

Lane became interested in filmmaking and video art while she was working at Children’s Media Project, a nonprofit youth media center in Poughkeepsie, New York. Starting in 2002, she has made over a dozen experimental short films which span the worlds of video art and documentary film, including The Abortion Diaries, The Voyagers, Just Add Water and Normal Appearances. Many of her short films are collected and distributed by VTAPE.

In 2013, Lane released her first feature-length film Our Nixon. The all-archival documentary featuring the never before seen home movies of Nixon staffers premiered at the 42nd International Film Festival Rotterdam in 2013, had its North American premiere at SXSW, and was selected as the Closing Night Film at New Directors/New Films. It earned wide critical acclaim and numerous film festival awards at Seattle International Film Festival, Ann Arbor Film Festival, Nantucket Film Festival, and Traverse City Film Festival.

In 2016, the director’s second feature-length film Nuts! a mostly-animated experimental documentary about con-man and quack, John Brinkley, world premiered at Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Special Jury Award for Editing.

Lane also released a companion project to Nuts! called Notes on Nuts!, a database of “footnotes” to the film in which she details over 300 instances of manipulation, tricky editing, and outright fabrications contained within the “mostly true” story in the film. Lane wrote that the website “takes the provocation of the film much further by engaging in a kind of radical honesty about all the tricks, manipulations and outright lies to be found in my film, with the idea that in doing so I could expand out from this one (admittedly really strange!) case study to instigate a whole new conversation: what would happen if documentary filmmakers started to regularly use footnotes?”

Lane returned to Sundance in 2019 to premiere her fourth feature-length documentary Hail Satan?, concerning the birth and rapid rise of The Satanic Temple.

In 2017, Lane was admitted into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Hail Satan?

An examination of the origins of The Satanic Temple and their brand of grassroots activism. The documentary premiered at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival and is distributed by Magnolia Pictures. Lane described the editing for the film occurred in approximately six months, “concurrent with the bulk of shooting.”

THE SATANIC TEMPLE

The Satanic Temple, often abbreviated TST, is a nontheistic religious organization that is primarily based in the United States, with additional congregations in Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom. Co-founded by Lucien Greaves, the organization’s spokesperson, and Malcolm Jarry, the organization uses Satanic imagery to promote egalitarianism, social justice, and the separation of church and state, supporting their mission “to encourage benevolence and empathy [among all people].” The Satanic Temple has utilized satire, theatrical ploys, humor, and legal action in their public campaigns to “generate attention and prompt people to reevaluate fears and perceptions”, and to “highlight religious hypocrisy and encroachment on religious freedom.”

The Satanic Temple does not believe in a supernatural Satan; instead it employs the literary Satan as a metaphor to promote pragmatic skepticism, rational reciprocity, personal autonomy, and curiosity. Satan is thus used as a symbol representing “the eternal rebel” against arbitrary authority and social norms. The organization’s participation in public affairs includes political actions as well as lobbying efforts, with a focus on exposing Christian privilege when it interferes with personal religious freedom. Tenets

The Satanic Temple has seven fundamental tenets:

One should strive to act with compassion and empathy toward all creatures in accordance with reason.

The struggle for justice is an ongoing and necessary pursuit that should prevail over laws and institutions.

One’s body is inviolable, subject to one’s own will alone.

The freedoms of others should be respected, including the freedom to offend. To willfully and unjustly encroach upon the freedoms of another is to forgo one’s own.

Beliefs should conform to one’s best scientific understanding of the world. One should take care never to distort scientific facts to fit one’s beliefs.

People are fallible. If one makes a mistake, one should do one’s best to rectify it and resolve any harm that might have been caused.
