Galaxy Quest is a 1999 American science fiction comedy film directed by Dean Parisot and written by David Howard and Robert Gordon. A parody of and homage to science-fiction films and series, especially Star Trek and its fandom, the film stars Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, Tony Shalhoub, Sam Rockwell, and Daryl Mitchell. It depicts the cast of a fictional defunct cult television series, Galaxy Quest, who are drawn into a real interstellar conflict when they are visited by actual aliens who think the series is an accurate documentary.

The film was a modest box office success and positively received by critics: it won the Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation and the Nebula Award for Best Script. It was also nominated for 10 Saturn Awards, including Best Science Fiction Film and Best Director for Parisot, Best Actress for Weaver, and Best Supporting Actor for Rickman, with Allen winning Best Actor.

Galaxy Quest eventually achieved cult status, especially from Star Trek fans for its affectionate parody, but also from more mainstream audiences as a comedy film in its own right.

Several Star Trek cast and crew members praised the film. It was included in Reader’s Digest‘s list of The Top 100+ Funniest Movies of All Time in 2012, and Star Trek fans voted it the seventh best Star Trek film of all time in 2013.

The Fatu-Krey are a species of green-skinned reptilian humanoid extraterrestrials from the planet of the same name.

The specifics of their technology are not well known, but they have mastered insterstellar travel, and have an understanding of cybernetics. Their ships are outfitted with Implosion Missiles and Neutron Armor. As well they seem to have a sort of digital conveyer.

PLOT SUMMARY

The cast of an old 1980s space-adventure television series, Galaxy Quest, spend most of their days attending fan conventions and making promotional appearances. Though the series’ conceited former star, Jason Nesmith, thrives on the attention, the other cast members—Gwen, Alexander, Fred, and Tommy—resent him and, to varying degrees, the states of their careers.

At a convention, Jason is approached by a group calling themselves Thermians, led by Mathesar, who request his help. Jason thinks they want him for a promotional appearance and agrees. The next morning, when the Thermians pick him up, Jason is hung over and does not grasp that the Thermians are aliens and that he has been transported to a working re-creation of the bridge of the NSEA Protector, the starship from Galaxy Quest. Believing he is on a set and must perform in character, he confronts the Thermians’ enemy, the evil warlord Sarris, who demands the “Omega 13”, a secret superweapon mentioned in the final scene of the series, which has never been used and whose capabilities are unknown. Giving perfunctory orders, Jason manages to temporarily defeat Sarris.

After the grateful Thermians transport him back to Earth, Jason realizes the experience was real. He attempts to convince the other cast members, but is rebuffed. When the Thermian Laliari appears and requests Jason’s help again, the cast, thinking it is a job, join him, including their handler Guy, who played an ill-fated redshirt in one episode of the series. Aboard the Protector, the cast learns that the guileless Thermians believe episodes of Galaxy Quest are true historical documentaries. Inspired by the crew’s adventures, they have based their society on the virtues espoused by the show and manufactured a functioning replica of the Protector.

Sarris returns and attacks the Protector again, and the ship barely escapes through a magnetic minefield; however, the ship’s power source, a beryllium sphere, is severely damaged. The humans must travel to the surface of a nearby planet for a new sphere, which they snatch from ferocious, childlike aliens. When the humans return to the Protector, they discover that Sarris has seized the ship and demands the “Omega 13” device. Jason confesses that he is not the commander and shows Sarris the Galaxy Quest “historical documents”. Sarris understands they are just actors and forces Jason to explain to a disillusioned Mathesar.

Sarris activates the Protector’s self-destruct mechanism and returns to his ship, leaving the Thermians and the cast members to die. The humans formulate a plan to abort the self-destruct and defeat Sarris’ remaining troops on the ship. Jason communicates with Brandon, a Galaxy Quest superfan on Earth, and his network of friends with intimate knowledge of the show. They talk Jason and Gwen through the ship’s core and help them abort the self-destruct sequence. Meanwhile, Alexander leads the Thermians against Sarris’ forces and they take back control of the Protector. With renewed confidence, the crew challenges Sarris and draws his ship into the magnetic minefield. This time, the Protector drags the magnetic mines into Sarris’ vessel, destroying it.

The Protector approaches Earth to bring the humans home, but Sarris, who escaped his ship’s destruction, ambushes them on the bridge and fatally wounds several crew members. Jason manages to activate the “Omega 13”, which creates a 13-second time warp to the past, giving Jason and Mathesar a chance to disarm Sarris before he repeats his attack.

The Protector’s bridge separates from the main vessel to land the humans on Earth, while the main section of the ship carries Mathesar and the remaining Thermians into interstellar space. Guided by Brandon and his friends acting as beacons, the Protector bridge crashes into a Galaxy Quest convention, coming to a stop on the main stage. The dazed cast emerges to the cheers of their fans, but Sarris reemerges to imperil them again. Jason shoots and obliterates Sarris, and the ecstatic crowd assumes it was all a massive display of special effects. The cast basks in the adoration of Brandon, his pals, and their fans.

Some time later, Galaxy Quest is revived as a sequel series, Galaxy Quest: The Journey Continues, with the cast reprising their roles alongside Guy and Laliari as new cast members.

Aldo Luis “Dean” Parisot (born July 6, 1952) is an American film and television director. He won the 1988 Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film for The Appointments of Dennis Jennings, which was co-written by and starred comedian Steven Wright, with whom he shares the award. Among his television credits are episodes of Monk (including the two-hour pilot “Mr. Monk and the Candidate”), Northern Exposure and Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Parisot was born in Wilton, Connecticut, to Ellen James (née Lewis), a painter and art teacher, and Aldo Parisot, a Brazilian-born, well-known cellist and pedagogue. He graduated from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. He took part in the Sundance Institute’s June Lab.

In 2012, he was hired to direct the third installment of the Bill and Ted franchise. The film was released on August 28, 2020.

DreamWorks Pictures (also known as DreamWorks SKG and formerly DreamWorks Studios, commonly referred to as DreamWorks) is an American film company and distribution label of Amblin Partners. It was originally founded on October 12, 1994 as a live-action film studio by Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg, and David Geffen (together, SKG), of which they owned 72%. The studio formerly distributed its own and third-party films. It has produced or distributed more than ten films with box-office grosses of more than $100 million each.

In December 2005, the founders agreed to sell the studio to Viacom, parent of Paramount Pictures. The sale was completed in February 2006 (this version is now named DW Studios). In 2008, DreamWorks announced its intention to end its partnership with Paramount and made a deal to produce films with India’s Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group, re-creating DreamWorks Pictures as an independent entity. The following year, DreamWorks entered into a distribution agreement with Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, wherein Disney would distribute DreamWorks films through the Touchstone Pictures label; the deal continued until August 2016. Since October 2016, Universal Pictures has distributed most of the films produced by DreamWorks Pictures. Currently, DreamWorks operates out of offices at Universal Studios Hollywood.

DreamWorks is also distinct from its former animation division of the same name, which was spun-off in 2004 and became a subsidiary of NBCUniversal in 2016. Spielberg’s company continues to use the original DreamWorks trademarks under license from DreamWorks Animation.

Alien is a 1979 science fiction horror film directed by Ridley Scott and written by Dan O’Bannon. Based on a story by O’Bannon and Ronald Shusett, it follows the crew of the commercial space tug Nostromo, who encounter the eponymous Alien, an aggressive and deadly extraterrestrial set loose on the ship. The film stars Tom Skerritt, Sigourney Weaver, Veronica Cartwright, Harry Dean Stanton, John Hurt, Ian Holm, and Yaphet Kotto. It was produced by Gordon Carroll, David Giler, and Walter Hill through their company Brandywine Productions, and was distributed by 20th Century Fox. Giler and Hill revised and made additions to the script; Shusett was executive producer. The Alien and its accompanying artifacts were designed by the Swiss artist H. R. Giger, while concept artists Ron Cobb and Chris Foss designed the more human settings.

Alien premiered May 25, 1979, as the opening night of the fourth Seattle International Film Festival, presented in 70mm at midnight. It received a wide release on June 22 and was released September 6 in the United Kingdom. It was met with mixed reviews on release but was a box-office success, winning the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, three Saturn Awards (Best Science Fiction Film, Best Direction for Scott, and Best Supporting Actress for Cartwright), and a Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation. In 2002, Alien was deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” by the Library of Congress and was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry. The success of Alien spawned a media franchise of films, novels, comic books, video games, and toys. It also launched Weaver’s acting career, providing her with her first lead role. The story of her character’s encounters with the Alien creatures became the thematic and narrative core of the sequels Aliens (1986), Alien 3 (1992), and Alien Resurrection (1997). A crossover with the Predator franchise produced the Alien vs. Predator films: Alien vs. Predator (2004) and Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem (2007). A prequel series includes Prometheus (2012) and Alien: Covenant (2017), both directed by Scott.

THE XENOMORPH

Xenomorph XX121, commonly referred to as simply the Xenomorph, and known colloquially as the Alien, is a highly aggressive endoparasitoid extraterrestrial species. The Xenomorphs are vicious predatory creatures with no higher goals than the propagation of their species and the destruction of any life that could pose a threat to them. Like wasps or bees, Xenomorphs are eusocial, with a fertile Queen breeding a host of subordinate castes. The creatures are known for their potent acidic blood and their pharyngeal jaws, although their biological life cycle, in which their offspring are implanted inside living hosts before erupting violently from their chests, is in many ways their signature aspect.

Aside from their repeated conflicts with humans, Xenomorphs have notably been associated with the Yautja, who know them as kainde amedha (“hard meat”). The Yautja revere the creatures as incredibly dangerous and thus highly worthy prey, notably employing them in initiation Hunts that serve to test young members of their society and mark their progression into adulthood.

Characteristics

Xenomorphs are primarily solitary ambush predators, although they have been known to adopt swarm tactics when acting in larger groups. Despite their voracious ability to kill, they often seek to take their victims alive to be hosts for more Xenomorphs; victims are taken to the Hive (or simply a secluded location if no Hive exists), cocooned and/or immobilized before being impregnated with a Xenomorph embryo. However, when their target becomes a threat or is deemed unsuitable for harvest, the Xenomorph will not hesitate to quickly dispatch the chosen host.

Physical abilities

When standing upright, Xenomorphs are vaguely bipedal in form, though they adopt a more hunched stance when walking or sprinting and are equally adept at moving on all four limbs, even in instances where the host was a bipedal lifeform, such as humans. They are quite capable of running and crawling along ceilings and walls and are expert jumpers. They possess great physical strength, having been known to break through metal vent covers and welded steel doors with little effort, and even of breaking down reinforced pressurized doors over time. Their large clawed talons are more than capable of tearing humans apart, while their primary jaws are capable of producing a bite strength estimated at 6,000 psi.

Xenomorphs do not radiate heat, and their body heat matches the ambient temperature of the environment in which they are found. Adverse extremes of temperature appear to have little, if any, affect on their physical prowess. In fact, physiologically they are incredibly hardy creatures – aside from being unaffected by temperature extremes that would quickly incapacitate or kill a human, they are capable of surviving in the hard vacuum of space, at least for a limited period of time. In order to succeed in their attack on enemy human vessels, the Rage equipped attacking Xenomorphs with breathing apparatus, suggesting that the creatures do require some form of atmosphere to survive for extended periods in space. One Alien on Fiorina 161 was even known to survive several tons of molten lead being poured onto it.

Society

Xenomorphs operate under a caste system, with groups of specialized individuals performing distinct tasks within the species. It is not clear to what degree these castes are subject to a social hierarchy, although certain Xenomorph types, notably the Praetorians and the Queens, clearly exercise some degree of control and superiority over other more common variations.

While individual Xenomorphs have been known to operate independently, owing to their tendency to reproduce rapidly and in large numbers they are more commonly encountered in groups and often likened to an infestation owing to their tendency to spread and consume all suitable host organisms in an area. As with many other eusocial organisms, Xenomorphs, particularly in larger groups, will create a central nest or Hive in which they will reside, often overseen by an Egg-laying Queen. Raiding parties will be sent out into the surrounding area to search for and capture more hosts, which will then be brought to the Hive and used to create more Xenomorphs. In larger infestations, smaller “satellite” Hives may be created, containing just a few Xenomorphs, allowing victims to be cocooned and impregnated even far away from the Queen herself.

Genetic Offshoots

In the event a Queen is killed, the hive prioritizes the creation of a new Queen. In the meantime, genetic drift may occur in remaining aliens, making them “freaks” and “mutants” to the parent strain. This new strain typically doesn’t exist for very long, as the new Queen will instruct her brood to destroy them, but rarely new strains are able to take root and then duel with other hives in vicious, planet-wide civil wars between hives.

Origins

While the exact origins of the Xenomorph XX121 have never been definitively determined, there have been several conflicting accounts of their origins and several notable theories on their beginnings have gained widespread recognition. The creature being artificially created by using Chemical A0-3959X.91 – 15 is the most probable cause of their origin.

Unnatural Lifeform

Perhaps the most prominent of these is that they are not a natural creature, but were created artificially to act as a biological weapon of war by another, technologically advanced race. Evidence suggested to support this includes the Xenomorph’s general biomechanical biology and appearance, as well as the perceived “perfection” of their physical nature. Various individuals have proposed that the Engineers may be the race that created the Xenomorph, especially given their known propensity for advanced bio-weapons (including Chemical A0-3959X.91 – 15), although another (less widely-accepted) theory is that the Yautja may have been responsible, owing to their close and lengthy association with the creatures.

Following the android David unleashing the Chemical A0-3959X.91 – 15 mutagen on the Engineer homeworld, the local fauna and fungi were affected and led to the formation of certain fungus-like growths that upon being disturbed released tiny, insect-like spores that infected any and all animal life, leading to the gestation of Neomorphs. Converting an Engineer temple into a laboratory, David began conducting experiments studying the mutagenic properties of Chemical A0-3959X.91 – 15 on the indigenous life of Planet 4 and tissue samples taken from deceased Engineers, Neomorphs, and Elizabeth Shaw. Over the course of a decade, David was able to hybridize various strains of Neomorph with Shaw’s mutated eggs to create Ovomorphs carrying Facehuggers that produced a non-biomechanical strain of the Xenomorph. David infiltrated the USCSS Covenant colony ship intending to continue his experiments using the crew and colonists, with the desired end result being the creation of a Queen. Whether the biomechanical Xenomorph XX121 was created by David as a direct result of further experimentation or “naturally” evolved from the Covenant strain, or even if they existed in some form prior to David’s experiments, is unknown. However, the third origin is more likely due the existence of the millennia-old derelict and it’s ancient cargo of Xenomorph Eggs.

Reptilians – also called reptoids, lizard people, archons, reptiloids, saurians, or draconians – are supposed reptilian humanoids, which play a prominent role in fantasy, science fiction, ufology, and conspiracy theories. The idea of reptilians was popularised by David Icke, a conspiracy theorist who claims shapeshifting reptilian aliens control Earth by taking on human form and gaining political power to manipulate human societies. Icke has stated on multiple occasions that many world leaders are, or are possessed by, so-called reptilians.

Origins

Michael Barkun, professor of political science at Syracuse University, posits that the idea of a reptilian conspiracy originated in the fiction of Conan the Barbarian creator Robert E. Howard, in his story “The Shadow Kingdom”, published in Weird Tales in August 1929. This story drew on theosophical ideas of the “lost worlds” of Atlantis and Lemuria, particularly Helena Blavatsky’s The Secret Doctrine written in 1888, with its reference to “‘dragon-men’ who once had a mighty civilization on a Lemurian continent”.

Howard’s “serpent men” were described as humanoids (with human bodies and snake heads) who were able to imitate humans at will, and who lived in underground passages and used their shapechanging and mind-control abilities to infiltrate humanity. Clark Ashton Smith used Howard’s “serpent men” in his stories, as well as themes from H. P. Lovecraft, and he, Howard and Lovecraft together laid the basis for the Cthulhu Mythos.

In the 1940s, Maurice Doreal (also known as Claude Doggins) wrote a pamphlet entitled “Mysteries of the Gobi” that described a “serpent race” with “bodies like man but…heads…like a great snake” and an ability to take human form. These creatures also appeared in Doreal’s poem “The Emerald Tablets”, in which he referred to Emerald Tablets written by “Thoth, an Atlantean Priest king”. Barkun asserts that “in all likelihood”, Doreal’s ideas came from “The Shadow Kingdom”, and that in turn, “The Emerald Tablets” formed the basis for David Icke’s book, Children of the Matrix.

Historian Edward Guimont has argued that the reptilian conspiracy theory, particularly as expounded by Icke, drew from earlier pseudohistorical legends developed during the colonisation of Africa, particularly surrounding Great Zimbabwe and the mokele-mbembe.

According to British conspiracy theorist David Icke, who first published on this theme in his 1999 work The Biggest Secret, tall, blood-drinking, shape-shifting reptilian humanoids from the Alpha Draconis star system, now hiding in underground bases, are the force behind a worldwide conspiracy against humanity. He contends that most of the world’s ancient and modern leaders are related to these reptilians, including the Merovingian dynasty, the Rothschilds, the Bush family and the British Royal family. Icke’s conspiracy theories now have supporters in up to 47 countries and he has given lectures to crowds of up to 6,000 people.

American writer Vicki Santillano included Icke’s conspiracy theory in her list of the 10 most popular conspiracy theories. A poll of Americans in 2013 by Public Policy Polling indicated that 4% of registered voters (±2.8%) believed in David Icke’s ideas.

Reptoids are a humanoid reptilian species who are either supposed alien threat that is discussed in the UFO culture as well as some conspiracy movements or play prominent roles in various fantasy folklore.

History

They are said to work in alliance with the Greys as either equals or as the masters (in some versions, they are not allies at all). In almost all stories involving them the Reptoids are portrayed as malevolent in regards to humanity and do not seem to shy from their plans to enslave or replace humanity. The idea of reptilians was popularized by David Icke, a conspiracy theorist who claims shapeshifting reptilian aliens control Earth by taking on human form and gaining political power to manipulate human societies. Icke has claimed on multiple occasions that many of the world leaders are, or are possessed by, so-called reptilians.

If the accounts of some UFO abductees are to be believed Reptoids are not just in conflict with humanity but are also a major threat to all mammalian life in the galaxy (save for the Greys). Why Reptoids have such an intense hatred for mammalian life is unexplained, though it could simply be down to arrogance or xenophobia.

Non Sci-Fi Tales

Some people believe the Reptoids are part of an ancient race that lived on Earth prior to current humanity and seek to reclaim their world while others think they are completely foreign beings that have somehow found Earth and seek it as their own. Very few believe the Reptoids to be benevolent and even amongst other supposed otherworldly species Reptoids are often portrayed as dangerous.

According to the more radical groups of conspiracy theorists, Reptoids have also managed to infiltrate humanity and are ruling the world in the form of powerful political leaders, capable of taking human shape at will and slowly working on the completion of the fabled New World Order concept.

Some conspiratorial Christian circles theorize that Reptoids are not aliens at all, but believe they are part of a demonic conspiracy involving the establishment of a one world luciferian government called the “new world order”, and a false rapture/alien invasion that would spark such a unity in the world’s governments. Although not specifically taught by mainstream Christianity, the idea of a false rapture is never outright denied in scripture. In fact, there are various places in the New Testament where there are allusions to a coming “great deception”. But as to what that Great Deception will be and how it will manifest, Christians cannot say for certain. But many of them believe it is coming, and that the “Old Serpent” is behind it.

On the opposite end of the spectrum some New Age groups and UFO cults see Reptoids as benevolent messengers of peace and enlightenment, this is criticized heavily by other New Age movements, who see Reptoids (much like Greys) as manipulative aliens that exploit human faith in order to infiltrate and gain power (this is popularized in media such as Stargate, itself based on Ancient Astronaut theories, which sees aliens posing as gods in order to manipulate human evolution and culture).

Out with the fantastical stories of New Age groups, UFO lore and conspiracy theorists the Reptoids have enjoyed more mainstream success as standard alien/monster-type in fiction.

In 1982, Dale A. Russell, then curator of vertebrate fossils at the National Museum of Canada in Ottawa, conjectured a possible evolutionary path for Stenonychosaurus, if it had not perished in the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event, suggesting that it could have evolved into intelligent beings similar in body plan to humans. Over geologic time, Russell noted that there had been a steady increase in the encephalization quotient or EQ (the relative brain weight when compared to other species with the same body weight) among the dinosaurs. Russell had discovered the first Troodontid skull, and noted that, while its EQ was low compared to humans, it was six times higher than that of other dinosaurs. Russell suggested that if the trend in Stenonychosaurus evolution had continued to the present, its brain case could by now measure 1,100 cm³, comparable to that of a human.

Troodontids had semi-manipulative fingers, able to grasp and hold objects to a certain degree, and binocular vision. Russell proposed that his “Dinosauroid”, like members of the troodontid family, would have had large eyes and three fingers on each hand, one of which would have been partially opposed. Russell also speculated that the “Dinosauroid” would have had a toothless beak. As with most modern reptiles (and birds), he conceived of its genitalia as internal. Russell speculated that it would have required a navel, as a placenta aids the development of a large brain case. However, it would not have possessed mammary glands, and would have fed its young, as some birds do, on regurgitated food. He speculated that its language would have sounded somewhat like bird song.

However, Russell’s thought experiment has been met with criticism from other paleontologists since the 1980s, many of whom point out that his Dinosauroid is overly anthropomorphic. Gregory S. Paul (1988) and Thomas R. Holtz, Jr., consider it “suspiciously human” and Darren Naish has argued that a large-brained, highly intelligent troodontid would retain a more standard theropod body plan, with a horizontal posture and long tail, and would probably manipulate objects with the snout and feet in the manner of a bird, rather than with human-like “hands”.

In fiction

Anthropomorphic reptilian races or beings commonly appear in fantasy and science fiction. They can be based on various reptiles, like crocodiles, alligators, snakes, dinosaurs, and the fictional dragons. They are often depicted as powerful warriors, though their relative intelligence to humans varies – as with other anthropomorphic races, a greater resemblance to humans often denotes more “civilized” behavior.

Science fiction

In works of science fiction, aliens are often depicted as closely resembling animals, with reptilian aliens being no exception. An early appearance was in the story “The Lizard-Men of Buh-Lo” (1930) by Francis Flagg. Other examples include the Gorn from Star Trek and the Dracs from the film Enemy Mine (1985). The television franchise V features the Visitors, a lizardlike alien race who disguise themselves as humans. The Cardassian race featured in multiple Star Trek series, is another example of reptilian humanoids in that particular science fiction universe. The “Tosk” people, featured on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, is another. The “Distant Origin” episode of Star Trek: Voyager then features the Voth, a race descended from the dinosaurs that had escaped extinction by leaving Earth and relocating to the Delta Quadrant. On the television series Doctor Who, there are also races or reptilian humanoids, such as the Silurians.

The ancestors of Modern Sleestak were the Altrusians. Their civilization fell approximately 1,000 years earlier. The Sleestak sometimes use the term “Altrusian” to refer to themselves and sometimes to refer only to the true Altrusians. Physically, the Altrusians were similar to Sleestak, with the former marked by a shorter stature, an extra finger on each hand, and a golden yellow skin tone. Intellectually they were very different, however. The Altrusians possessed advanced psionic technologies based on light crystals and understood a great deal about the operation of the Land of the Lost. They strove for calm emotionlessness and as a result could be both cooperative and quite callous. Also, unlike the Sleestak, the Altrusians did not have an aversion to bright light and could venture even into daylight with no ill effects.

One Altrusian, named Enik, is a recurring character in the series, introduced in the episode “The Stranger”. He travels to the current time accidentally via a time doorway. He initially believes himself to be in the distant past, but upon discovering the ruins of the Lost City, he theorizes that his people degenerated into modern Sleestak when they failed to control their hate and anger. Rick Marshall speculates that it was not the presence of hate that doomed the Altrusians, but rather the absence of compassion; Enik considers this to be a cogent argument and plans to return to his people to warn them of this flaw in their philosophy.

Altrusians have a very strict code of honor: they cannot allow others to show more self-control or make greater personal sacrifices than themselves. One can thus shame them into making sacrifices. In “The Search”, Will (unintentionally) convinces Enik to pass up a chance to return to his own time by first passing up an opportunity of his own to return to Earth. Enik also claims that Altrusians are incapable of lying although clearly they can “bend” the truth (or not give full disclosure of all facts) if it is in their best interest to do so. While Enik told Jack Marshall that he grasped the concept of morality, he concluded that it was “not logical”. Also handed down from the Altrusians was the concept of “Altrusian grace”. This meant that someone (including a human) who helped a Sleestak would be allowed safe passage to and from the Library of Skulls to ask the Index Skull a single question.

Enik is the main antagonist of the 2009 comedy film Land of the Lost.

He was portrayed by the late Walker Edmiston in the TV series, and John Boylan in the movie.

History

Early life

Enik was a Altrusian who committed acts of genocide against his congeners. He was condemned to be imprisoned for 10,000 years, but he manages to escape and then murders The Zarn, the current ruler of the Altrusians. He uses Tachyon Crystals to control the Sleestaks and plans to send his army across time and space to invade and conquer the World.

Current Life

After the paleontologist Rick Marshall and his friends Holly and Will arrive in The Land of the Lost thanks to his Tachyon Amplifier, Enik sends him a telepathic message for they meet in the Central Pylon where he resides and manipulates the Crystals. Here, Enik tell lies about The Zarn, claiming that he’s the one who controls the Sleestaks and plans to take over the World with his army. He manipulates Rick and the others and convinces them to retrieve the Tachyon Amplifier (which has been lost). He also befriends Rick.

Much later, after the three finally find the Tachyon Amplifier, Holly discovers a recording left by The Zarn which he tells the truth about Enik and is seen killed by him. But before she warns his friends that Enik deceived them, she is captured by the Sleestaks. Shortly after Rick and Will come to save her, but Enik sends the tyrannosaurus Grumpy to attack them and uses the Tachyon Amplifier to open a portal to Earth. However, Rick manages to befriend with Grumpy and uses him to defeat the Sleestak army. He then confronts Enik and Will accidentally shatters the Crystal link between the Land of the Lost and Earth, which will close it forever. Rick and Holly go through the portal before it closes, but Will chooses to stay behind to prevent Enik from following them.

Enik is last mentioned by Will as having lost control over the Sleestaks and being attacked by them.

Sleestak are devolved green humanoids with both reptilian and insectoid features; they have scaly skin with frills around the neck, bulbous unblinking eyes, pincer-like hands, stubby tails, and a single blunt horn on top of the head, and bear a resemblance to the hypothetical “Dinosauroid”. Sleestak often communicate with a hissing sound that rarely changes in characteristics. However, like their Altrusian ancestors, they possess some rudimentary form of telepathy as well. Sleestak are more sophisticated than Pakuni and are able to make crossbows, rope, nets, periscopes and other relatively advanced technologies. Sleestak are typically equipped with a crossbow and a quiver full of metal bolts which hang from their waist. The Sleestak have a current population of about 7,000 according to the Library of Skulls, but there were only three Sleestak costumes available for the show’s production, which sometimes required creative editing to create the illusion that they were that numerous.

LAND OF THE LOST (2009 MOVIE)

In the movie, the Sleestaks serve as primary antagonists. Originally, they were under the leadership of The Zarn, but they were enslaved by the Tachyon-manipulating Enik after he killed him.

In the film, it’s revealed that Sleestaks can reproduce rapidly and that they possess a secondary set of jaws that are only visible when attacking (contrary to the 1974 TV series where the Sleestaks are toothless).

In the past, the Sleestaks condemned Enik the Altrusian to be imprisoned for 10,000 years for his genocidal crimes. However, he manages to escape and murders The Zarn, the current ruler of the Sleestaks. He uses Tachyon Crystals to control the Sleestaks and plans to send his army across time and space to invade and conquer the World.

Long after, the paleontologist Rick Marshall and his friends Holly and Will arrive in The Land of the Lost and Enik sends them telepathic message to tell them to come see him in the Central Pylon. However, after coming they are attacked by the Sleestaks and are forced to took refuge into the Pylon. The following day, Holly is captured by non-controlled Sleestaks for assisting Enik, but Rick and Will save her from being executed and kill the Sleestaks. Enik later arrives with his army of mind-controlled Sleestaks and sends Grumpy to attack them, but the dinosaur finally befriends Rick and defeats the Sleestak army.

After Enik’s fail, Will mentions that he has lost control over the Sleestaks and has been attacked by them.

At the end of the film, an egg that was brought by Rick on Earth is seen hatch, and it turns out to be a baby Sleestak.

Land of the Lost is a 2009 American science fiction adventure comedy film directed by Brad Silberling, written by Chris Henchy and Dennis McNicholas and starring Will Ferrell, Danny McBride and Anna Friel, loosely based on the 1974 Sid and Marty Krofft television series of the same name. The film was theatrically released on June 5, 2009 by Universal Pictures.

The film received generally negative reviews from critics and was a box office bomb, grossing just $68 million against its $100 million budget. It received seven Golden Raspberry Award nominations, including Worst Picture, winning Worst Prequel, Remake, Rip-off or Sequel.

PLOT SUMMARY

Pompous paleontologist Rick Marshall has a low-level job at the La Brea Tar Pits, three years after a disastrous interview with Matt Lauer on Today went viral and ruined his career. Doctoral candidate from Cambridge Holly Cantrell tells him that his controversial theories combining time warps and paleontology inspired her.

She shows him a fossil with an imprint of a cigarette lighter that he recognizes as his own, along with a crystal made into a necklace that gives off strong tachyon energy. She convinces him to finish his tachyon amplifier and go on an expedition to the cave where Holly found the fossil, in the desert.

They raft into the cave, with cave gift shop owner Will Stanton, where Marshall detects high levels of tachyons. Activating the tachyon amplifier triggers an earthquake, opening a time warp the raft falls into. They find themselves in an interdimensional desert, filled with items from many eras, and without the amplifier. They rescue an apeman by the name of Chaka, who becomes their friend and guide.

They spend a night in a cave after surviving a meeting with a fast and intelligent tyrannosaur they nickname “Grumpy”, who develops a grudge against Marshall for being intellectually disparaged. Marshall receives a telepathic invocation for help and finds himself in ancient ruins. They encounter a race of lizard men called Sleestaks before meeting Enik the Altrusian (who sent the message). Exiled by the Zarn, who wants to take over Earth with his Sleestak minions, Enik can prevent the invasion if Marshall gets the tachyon amplifier.

The group stumbles across a desert with many things from across time, encountering many compsognathuses, dromaeosaurs, Grumpy, and a female allosaur nicknamed “Big Alice”. These last two are battling it out over a dead ice-cream seller, who was killed by the dromaeosaurs, until they sense Marshall and chase him. Marshall kills Big Alice with liquid nitrogen, finding the amplifier was eaten by the allosaur. But a pteranodon snatches the tachyon amplifier into its caldera incubator. Treading lightly on the thin volcanic-glass floor of the glowing caldera, Marshall gives himself over to the music of A Chorus Line coming from the tachyon amplifier, and dancingly meanders between the pterosaur eggs towards the device. When he reaches it, the playback suddenly stops. The eggs begin to hatch, and they realize the music was keeping the baby pterosaurs asleep. Marshall, Will and Holly belt out “I Hope I Get It”, with Chaka joining in to display a great singing voice, much to everyone’s surprise.

While Marshall, Will and Chaka celebrate, Holly takes a dinosaur egg and learns from a recording left by the long-deceased Zarn that Enik is lying (he is the one planning the Earth invasion). She is captured by the Sleestaks, and brought to the Library of Skulls for judgment. The others save her, but the villain, with the amplifier, and controlling the Sleestaks, leaves to open a portal to Earth.

Marshall pole-vaults into Grumpy’s mouth and, by dislodging an intestinal obstruction, earns the beast’s gratitude. Riding atop the tyrannosaur, he joins the others to defeat the Sleestak army and confront Enik. After the crystal link between the Land of the Lost and Earth is shattered, Enik reveals the portal will close forever. Thinking fast, Marshall grabs Holly’s crystal, inserting it into the port. Knowing the substitute crystal won’t hold for long, they leave quickly. Will chooses to stay, and is later welcomed by a bevy of cheerful and attractive girls of Chaka’s tribe.

A triumphant Marshall reappears on Today with the dinosaur egg Holly brought back, promoting his new book “Matt Lauer Can Suck It!”. The egg left behind on the Today set hatches a baby Sleestak, which hisses as the screen goes black.

Bradley Mitchell Silberling (born September 8, 1963) is an American television and film director whose credits include the feature films Casper (1995), City of Angels (1998), Moonlight Mile (2002), Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events (2004) and Land of the Lost (2009).

Career

Silberling began his entertainment industry career before completing his studies. In 1986, he became a Production Assistant for a children’s program. He then began to direct television and film. Silberling’s 2002 film, Moonlight Mile, is loosely based on his bereavement following the murder of his girlfriend, actress Rebecca Schaeffer, in 1989. In 2006, Silberling’s movie 10 Items or Less was the first movie made legally available for download during its theatrical run. This became possible through ClickStar and Silberling’s close relationship with its owners Morgan Freeman and Lori McCreary. On March 1, 1999, he started out his own production company Reveal Entertainment, with a first-look development deal at DreamWorks. The first project under Reveal was an attempt to purchase the script The Mystery Dance, for himself to direct in mind, but the idea was later scrapped.

Silberling was approached by Warner Bros. as one of the candidates to direct Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone in 1998. Although he began to enthusiastically plan the film in his mind and was ready to sign on to direct it, Chris Columbus was ultimately chosen as the director. On October 22, 2014, his Reveal Entertainment company signed a deal with CBS Television Studios. He was currently signed with ICM Partners.

Christopher Thomas Henchy is an American screenwriter and producer. He is best known for being a creative collaborator with Will Ferrell, including co-creating the website Funny or Die and writing several Ferrell films, including Land of the Lost, The Other Guys and The Campaign.

Career

After graduation, Henchy moved to New York City and worked on Wall Street. He later left his job and decided to work in comedy. He was hired by MTV and later wrote monologue jokes for Garry Shandling’s The Larry Sanders Show.

Henchy went on to write for Campus Cops in 1996. After writing for a few television specials and some guest-writing stints on series, Henchy created and produced the television series Battery Park in 2000, which starred Elizabeth Perkins.

Henchy was a writer and producer for television sitcoms Spin City and Life With Bonnie. He created the sitcom I’m with Her with Marco Pennette, which was loosely based on Henchy’s relationship with wife Brooke Shields. The show was cancelled by ABC after one season. Henchy later became the co-executive producer of Entourage and a producer on HBO’s Eastbound & Down. He, along with Will Ferrell and Adam McKay, created the website Funny or Die. Henchy produced The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard. He is credited as a writer of the 2009 film Land of the Lost, The Other Guys and The Campaign which he also co-produced. In 2018, Henchy was announced to be directing a feature-length film for the television series Impractical Jokers with production work by Funny or Die. It was released in February 2020 under the name Impractical Jokers: The Movie.

Relativity Media is an American media company founded in 2004 by Lynwood Spinks and Ryan Kavanaugh. The company brokered film finance deals and later branched into film production and other entertainment ventures. The company was commercially successful prior to bankruptcy.

In 2015, Relativity Media filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy after lawsuits and missing loan payments. The bankruptcy was noted as one of the most notorious in entertainment industry. As a result, the company began selling off previously acquired films. Relativity Media reorganized and emerged from bankruptcy in March 2016, but in May 2018 it filed for bankruptcy again. The studio is now being operated by a new parent company, UltraV Holdings.

A multi-center, randomized, open-label study assessed the effectiveness of vitamin D and the Zelenko protocol (hydroxychloroquine, zinc, and azithromycin). Seven hospitals in Turkey applied the treatment protocol with and without vitamin C to study its effectiveness for shortening the duration of illness and prevention of death.

Out of the 237 hospitalized patients, (ages 22-99), one passed away at the age of 70. The patient had severe vitamin D deficiency and underlying heart and lung disease. The remaining 99.58% of patients recovered with broad spectrum, natural immunity. During the study, the researchers found that 97% of all the hospitalized patients were vitamin D deficient. Patients who were severely vitamin D deficient (55%) were more likely to end up in the ICU and be hospitalized longer. A majority (73%) of hospitalized patients also suffered from underlying comorbidities such as diabetes, heart and lung disease.

The researchers found that intravenous vitamin C sped up patient recovery from an average of 45 days in the hospital to 15 days. The study concludes that a “treatment protocol of HCQ, AZM, and zinc with or without vitamin C is safe and effective in the treatment of COVID-19, with high dose IV vitamin C leading to a significantly quicker recovery.”

The suppression of efficacious treatments has turned hospitals into modern day gas chambers

After the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a “worldwide pandemic” in February of 2020, all eyes were fixated on hospital capacity. Even though most hospitals around the country never witnessed a much-anticipated surge in infections, there were inner city hospital systems that saw burgeoning fatality rates. Hospitals in New York City were among the first to advertise their failure in treating covid-19 patients.

These inner-city hospitals are normally overcrowded with influenza, pneumonia, RSV and various nosocomial infected patients, but in 2020, during the covid-19 awakening, the world got to see the problems within the medical system. Hopeless ventilation protocols were the standard of care from the start. The federal coronavirus response, under the leadership of Dr. Anthony Fauci, forced the widespread manufacture of these machines.

Fearing the spread of an unknown strain of severe acute respiratory syndrome, hospitals were incentivized to diagnose covid-19 early and often, even when it was merely suspected. Fraudulent PCR testing was rolled out en masse, even though it was never designed to identify and properly diagnose a single infectious disease. Droves of hospital patients were rushed onto a closed loop system, aka ventilators, to stop them from “spreading” or breathing into the surrounding air. These devices of death destroyed lungs, imparted oxidative damage, caused nosocomial infections and cytokine storms, leading to ghastly fatality rates. Under this system of terror and iatrogenic error, hospital systems were exposed as modern-day gas chambers.

Under Fauci’s leadership,  hospital systems disregarded all the efficacious treatment protocols that were being used successfully around the world. Effective treatment protocols from independent US clinics were also ignored and censored. The Zelenko protocol used hydroxychloroquine (HCQ), zinc and azithromycin early on to successfully treat thousands of patients. But insurance companies and the pharmaceutical industry dominate the medical profession, using regulatory agencies like the FDA to impose their so-called science onto medical professionals. Fauci was quick to shut down the Zelenko protocol in the US, but pushed for the widespread use of highly profitable Remdesivir, which only contributes to renal failure, iatrogenic error and increasing fatality rates.

In order to legally approve a “vaccine” with the FDA’s emergency use authorization, no efficacious treatment protocols can exist. The mRNA vaccine experiment that has contributed to further medical error and early death, was forced on the US and the rest of the world by simply withholding valuable information on viable treatments and by suppressing the use of nutraceuticals, antivirals, herbal medicine, bronco-dilators, immune-modulators and anti-inflammatory drugs. After two years of following along with these crimes against humanity, many medical professionals clearly look like Mengele puppets now, pushing propaganda and withholding treatments that work.

Dr. Fauci, the CDC and the FDA do not need to be investigated because their crimes are right out in the open. Fauci and the dictators at the CDC use the staggering covid-19 death toll to blame the unvaccinated, but these public health propagandists are really just using innocent people as scapegoats to cover up for the government’s extensive list of crimes. Meanwhile, the “unvaccinated” are still treated poorly in US hospitals, and they have to fight for their right to use basic anti-viral protocols while they are wrongfully isolated, discriminated and mistreated in the hospital death chambers.

If hospitals utilized hydroxychloroquine (HCQ), zinc and azithromycin (the Zelenko protocol), along with intravenous vitamin C, vitamin D, nutritious juices, ivermectin and plant-based antivirals, then covid-19-associated fatalities would be virtually nonexistent. These treatment protocols were common knowledge long before 2020, but hospitals are not financially incentivized to treat infectious diseases properly. These institutions of death are set up to profit from people’s suffering. Even sadder: kind healthcare professionals are forced to work in this coercive environment of despair, droning away in a divisive, abusive culture where they don’t even have authority over their own conscience or body autonomy anymore.

Remdesivir, sold under the brand name Veklury, is a broad-spectrum antiviral medication developed by the biopharmaceutical company Gilead Sciences. It is administered via injection into a vein. During the COVID 19 pandemic, remdesivir was approved or authorized for emergency use to treat COVID 19 in numerous countries.

Remdesivir was originally developed to treat hepatitis C, and was subsequently investigated for Ebola virus disease and Marburg virus infections before being studied as a post-infection treatment for COVID 19.

Remdesivir is a prodrug that is intended to allow intracellular delivery of GS-441524 monophosphate and subsequent biotransformation into GS-441524 triphosphate, a ribonucleotide analogue inhibitor of viral RNA polymerase.

The most common side effect in healthy volunteers is raised blood levels of liver enzymes. The most common side effect in people with COVID 19 is nausea. Side effects may include liver inflammation and an infusion-related reaction with nausea, low blood pressure, and sweating.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) considers it to be a first-in-class medication.

Medical uses

In the European Union, remdesivir is indicated for the treatment of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID 19) in adults and adolescents (aged twelve years and older with body weight at least 40 kilograms (88 lb)) with pneumonia requiring supplemental oxygen.

In the United States, remdesivir is indicated for use in adults and adolescents (aged twelve years and older with body weight at least 40 kilograms (88 lb)) for the treatment of COVID 19 requiring hospitalization. In January 2022, the FDA expanded the indication for remdesivir to include its use in non-hospitalized adults and adolescents with positive results of direct SARS-CoV-2 viral testing, and who are not hospitalized and have mild-to-moderate COVID 19, and are at high risk for progression to severe COVID 19, including hospitalization or death.

In November 2020, the FDA issued an emergency use authorization (EUA) for the combination of baricitinib with remdesivir, for the treatment of suspected or laboratory confirmed COVID 19 in hospitalized people two years of age or older requiring supplemental oxygen, invasive mechanical ventilation, or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).

Manufacturing

Remdesivir requires “70 raw materials, reagents, and catalysts” to make, and approximately “25 chemical steps.” Some of the ingredients are extremely dangerous to humans, especially trimethylsilyl cyanide. The original end-to-end manufacturing process required 9 to 12 months to go from raw materials at contract manufacturers to finished product, but after restarting production in January 2020, Gilead Sciences was able to find ways to reduce the production time to six months.

In January 2020, Gilead began working on restarting remdesivir production in glass-lined steel chemical reactors at its manufacturing plant in Edmonton, Alberta. On 2 February 2020, the company flew its entire stock of remdesivir, 100 kilograms in powder form (left over from Ebola research), to its filling plant in La Verne, California to start filling vials. The Edmonton plant finished its first new batch of remdesivir in April 2020. Around the same time, fresh raw materials began to arrive from contract manufacturers reactivated by Gilead in January.

Another challenge is getting remdesivir into patients despite the drug’s “poor predicted solubility and poor stability.” In June 2020, Ligand Pharmaceuticals revealed that Gilead has been managing those issues by mixing Ligand’s proprietary excipient Captisol (based on University of Kansas research into cyclodextrin) with remdesivir at a 30:1 ratio. Since that implies an enormous amount of Captisol is needed to stabilize and deliver remdesivir (on top of amounts needed for several other drugs for which the excipient is already in regular use), Ligand announced that it is trying to boost Captisol annual manufacturing capacity to as much as 500 metric tons.

On 12 May 2020, Gilead announced that it had granted non-exclusive voluntary licenses to five generic drug companies in India and Pakistan to manufacture remdesivir for distribution to 127 countries. The agreements were structured so that the licensees can set their own prices and will not have to pay royalties to Gilead until the WHO declares an end to the COVID 19 emergency or another medicine or vaccine is approved for COVID 19, whichever comes first. On 23 June 2020, India granted emergency marketing approval of generic remdesivir manufactured by two Gilead licensees, Cipla and Hetero Drugs.

Gilead Sciences, Inc., is an American biopharmaceutical company headquartered in Foster City, California, that focuses on researching and developing antiviral drugs used in the treatment of HIV/AIDS, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and influenza, including ledipasvir/sofosbuvir and sofosbuvir. The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA or USFDA) is a federal agency of the Department of Health and Human Services. The FDA is responsible for protecting and promoting public health through the control and supervision of food safety, tobacco products, dietary supplements, prescription and over-the-counter pharmaceutical drugs (medications), vaccines, biopharmaceuticals, blood transfusions, medical devices, electromagnetic radiation emitting devices (ERED), cosmetics, animal foods & feed and veterinary products.

The FDA is led by the Commissioner of Food and Drugs, appointed by the President with the advice and consent of the Senate. The Commissioner reports to the Secretary of Health and Human Services. Robert Califf is the current commissioner, as of 17 February 2022.

The FDA has its headquarters in unincorporated White Oak, Maryland. The agency also has 223 field offices and 13 laboratories located throughout the 50 states, the United States Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico. Robert McKinnon Califf (born 1951) is an American cardiologist who currently serves as the commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration. He was nominated to be commissioner in September 2015 by President Barack Obama and he was confirmed by the U.S. Senate in February 2016, serving until January 20, 2017.

President Joe Biden renominated Califf to head the Food and Drug Administration on November 12, 2021. He was confirmed by the Senate of February 15, 2022.

Prior to becoming commissioner he had served as the Deputy Commissioner of the United States Food and Drug Administration’s Office of Medical Products and Tobacco since January 2015. In 2019, he became head of medical strategy at Google parent company Alphabet Inc.

Career

FDA under Obama

In January 2015, Califf was appointed Deputy Commissioner of the United States Food and Drug Administration’s Office of Medical Products and Tobacco, “second in scope only to being commissioner”. In February 2015, Califf was cited as a possible successor to Margaret Hamburg, the outgoing Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration. and in September 2015, President Barack Obama nominated him to be the next FDA commissioner. In February 2016, the US Senate confirmed Califf as commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration by a vote of 89-4. Dr. Califf stepped down from the post of FDA commissioner on January 20, 2017.

FDA under Biden

On November 12, 2021, President Biden announced he was nominating Califf to return as head of the FDA. During his hearing before the Senate HELP committee on December 14, 2021, he was questioned relating to the pandemic, opioid crisis, and issues relating to abortion. Some Democrats opposed his nomination due to his corporation ties and the opioid crisis. Several Republican senators opposed his nomination because of issues relating to abortion. Califf’s initial nomination ultimately expired at the end of the year and was returned to President Biden on January 3, 2022.

Califf’s nomination was resent to the Senate the following day. On January 13, 2022, he was advanced out of committee by a 13-8 vote. On February 15, 2022, the Senate confirmed his nomination by a 50-46 vote. Dr. Califf assumed office on February 17, 2022.

Janet Woodcock (born August 29, 1948) is an American physician who is currently serving as the acting Commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). She joined the FDA in 1986, and has held a number of senior leadership positions there, including terms as the Director of Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER) from 1994 to 2004 and 2007 to 2021.

Woodcock has overseen the modernization and streamlining of CDER and FDA, introducing new initiatives to improve the timeliness and transparency of FDA procedures, and the safety, quality and effectiveness of drugs. She informs the United States Congress and other government bodies about the FDA and its concerns, helping to develop policy recommendations and legislation. In 2015, Woodcock received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Institute for Safe Medication Practices in recognition of “a significant career history of making ongoing contributions to patient safety.” She has also received the 2019 Biotechnology Heritage Award.

Woodcock joined the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1986, as the Director of the Division of Biological Investigational New Drugs in the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER). As of September, 1990, she became Acting Deputy Director of CBER. She became Acting Director of the Office of Therapeutics Research and Review (part of CBER) as of November 1992, and was confirmed as Director of the Office of Therapeutics Research and Review as of November 1993.

From May 1994 to April 2004 Woodcock served as Director of the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER) of the FDA.

From April 2004 to July 2005, Woodcock was Acting Deputy Commissioner for Operations at the FDA. From July 2005 to January 2007, she served as Deputy Commissioner for Operations and Chief Operating Officer of the FDA. From October 2007 to March 2008, Woodcock also served as Acting Director of the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER). Controversy

Opioid crisis

On January 27, 2021 a coalition of 28 public health groups and opioid crisis organizations sent a letter to the Biden Administration regarding Woodcock’s position as Acting Commissioner of the FDA. The letter said in part that “as the Director of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER) for more than 25 years, Dr. Woodcock presided over one of the worst regulatory agency failures in U.S. history.” Examples of improper opioid decisions mentioned in the letter include “approving Opana without adequate evidence of safety or long-term efficacy, approving Zohydro despite a vote of 11-2 against approval by a scientific advisory committee, and approving promotion of OxyContin for children as young as 11 years old.”

Stephen Michael Hahn (born January 22, 1960) is an American physician who served as the Commissioner of Food and Drugs from 2019 to 2021. Before becoming Commissioner, he was an oncologist serving as Chief Medical Executive of the MD Anderson Cancer Center.

U.S. Commissioner of Food and Drugs

On November 1, 2019, U.S. President Donald Trump announced his intent to nominate Hahn to be Commissioner of Food and Drugs Administration. On December 3, 2019, the Senate Health Education Labor and Pensions Committee voted 18 to 5 to advance the nomination to the Senate floor. On December 12, 2019, the Senate confirmed his nomination by a 72–18 vote. Hahn was sworn in on December 17, 2019.

Hahn has factored prominently in the Trump administration’s response to the novel coronavirus pandemic in the United States, although the FDA under his administration has also been criticized for a lethargic response to the rapidly emerging outbreak in the United States. By November 2020, Hahn had gained the confidence of individuals concerned about the politicization of the agency.

On March 1, 2020, Vice President Mike Pence and Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar announced the addition of Hahn to the White House Coronavirus Task Force.

According to a whistleblower complaint filed by HHS infectious disease expert Rick Bright, in April 2020, Hahn instructed FEMA administrator Peter Gaynor “to distribute hydroxychloroquine to pharmacies nationwide,” even though the emergency use authorization (EUA) issued by the FDA did not provide for outpatient use of hydroxychloroquine for COVID-19. Hydroxychloroquine was later linked to multiple deaths of COVID-19 patients, and the FDA revoked the EUA in June 2020.

On July 5, 2020, Hahn refused to defend Trump’s false claim that 99% of coronavirus cases are “totally harmless”; in response to an interview question about the president’s claim, Hahn said, “I’m not going to get into who is right and who is wrong.”

On August 23, 2020, Hahn joined with Trump and Azar in announcing an emergency authorization for the use of coronavirus convalescent plasma in treating COVID-19. As with hydroxychloroquine, Trump publicly exerted major pressure on the FDA to approve convalescent plasma as a COVID-19 treatment, even suggesting that “deep state, or whoever over at the FDA” was blocking the authorization. The approval came a few days after Trump publicly complained that the agency was moving too slowly on plasma and suggested they might be delaying the approval for political reasons. In fact, the delay was due to concerns at the National Institutes of Health that the treatment’s effectiveness had not been adequately demonstrated. Hahn has said that Trump “has asked FDA to cut back red tape and try to speed medical products into the hands of providers, patients and American consumers.” In making the announcement Trump exaggerated plasma’s effectiveness compared to the FDA’s own assessment, and Hahn did not correct him. After coming under criticism from scientists and former FDA officials for echoing Trump’s exaggerated claims about the benefits of convalescent plasma, Hahn issued an apology/correction, saying, “The criticism is entirely justified. What I should have said better is that the data show a relative risk reduction, not an absolute risk reduction.”

The FDA was criticized in the beginning stages of the pandemic in the U.S. for moving slowly and bureaucratically in approving COVID-19 tests developed by laboratories, prompting concerns from academic medical centers and others. On February 29, 2020, the FDA allowed laboratories to begin using tests after validation, but still required emergency use authorization applications. Over the following months, the FDA approved many COVID-19 tests, including lab-developed and non-lab-developed tests. In August 2020, the Trump administration blocked the FDA from regulating COVID-19 tests and a wide array of other laboratory tests. The move was strongly opposed by Hahn and the FDA, and came after rising tensions between Hahn and Azar. The sudden move was criticized by public health experts, who stated the change could lead to more unreliable or defective coronavirus tests entering the market, and pointed out that testing shortages were by that point primarily attributable to shortages of swabs, chemical reagents, and other supplies, rather than a lack of approved tests.

After controversy over the hydroxychloroquine and plasma authorizations, Hahn transferred two political appointees from the top public relations and communications posts at the agency, replacing them with career civil servants on an acting basis. Emily Miller, the agency’s top spokesperson, who had no prior medical or science experience, was removed on August 28 after just two weeks on the job. On September 2 John “Wolf” Wagner, a close ally of chief DHS spokesman Michael Caputo, was removed from his post as FDA’s associate commissioner for external affairs after serving for two months.

Hahn left office on January 20, 2021. Six months later he assumed the role of chief medical officer of Flagship Pioneering, the venture firm behind Moderna.

Anthony Stephen Fauci OMRI (born December 24, 1940) is an American physician-scientist and immunologist serving as the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and the Chief Medical Advisor to the President.

As a physician with the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Fauci has served the American public health sector in various capacities for more than fifty years and has acted as an advisor to every U.S. president since Ronald Reagan. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he served under President Donald Trump as one of the lead members of the White House Coronavirus Task Force. Fauci’s advice was frequently contradicted by Trump, and Trump’s supporters alleged that Fauci was trying to politically undermine Trump’s run for reelection. After Joe Biden took office, Fauci began serving as one of the lead members of the White House COVID-19 Response Team and as Biden’s chief medical advisor.

On August 22, 2022, Dr. Fauci announced he will be stepping down from government service in December.

The king cobra (Ophiophagus hannah) is a venomous snake species of elapids endemic to jungles in Southern and Southeast Asia. The sole member of the genus Ophiophagus, it is distinguishable from other cobras, most noticeably by its size and neck patterns. The king cobra is the world’s longest venomous snake, with an average length of 3.18 to 4 m (10.4 to 13.1 ft), reaching a maximum of 5.85 m (19.2 ft). Its skin colour varies across the habitats, from black with white stripes to unbroken brownish grey. It preys chiefly on other snakes, including its own species. Unlike other snakes, it rarely hunts other vertebrates, such as rodents and lizards.

Like most cobras and mambas, the king cobra’s threat display includes spreading its neck-flap, raising its head upright, puffing, and hissing. Despite its fearsome reputation, the king cobra avoids confrontation with humans whenever possible. When provoked, however, it is capable of striking a target at long range and well above the ground. Rather than biting and retreating, it may sustain its bite and inject a large quantity of venom, which is a medical emergency.

Regarded as the national reptile of India, this species has an eminent position in mythology and folk traditions of India, Sri Lanka and Myanmar. Threatened by habitat destruction, the king cobra has been listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List since 2010.

Distribution and habitat

The king cobra has a wide distribution in South and Southeast Asia. It occurs up to an elevation of 2,000 m (6,600 ft) from the Terai in India and southern Nepal to the Brahmaputra River basin in Bhutan and northeast India, Bangladesh and to Myanmar, southern China, Cambodia, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and the Philippines.

Venom

The king cobra’s venom consists of cytotoxins and neurotoxins, including alpha-neurotoxins and three-finger toxins. Other components have cardiotoxic effects. Its venom is produced in anatomical glands named postorbital venom glands.

It can deliver up to 420 mg venom in dry weight (400–600 mg overall) per bite, with a LD50 toxicity in mice of 1.28 mg/kg through intravenous injection, 1.5 to 1.7 mg/kg through subcutaneous injection, and 1.644 mg/kg through intraperitoneal injection. For research purposes, up to 1 g of venom was obtained through milking.

The toxins affect the victim’s central nervous system, resulting in severe pain, blurred vision, vertigo, drowsiness, and eventually paralysis. If the envenomation is serious, it progresses to cardiovascular collapse, and the victim falls into a coma. Death soon follows due to respiratory failure. The affected person can die within 30 minutes of envenomation. Ohanin, a protein component of the venom, causes hypolocomotion and hyperalgesia in mammals. Large quantities of antivenom may be needed to reverse the progression of symptoms.

Polyvalent antivenom of equine origin is produced by Haffkine Institute and King Institute of Preventive Medicine and Research in India. A polyvalent antivenom produced by the Thai Red Cross Society can effectively neutralize venom of the king cobra. In Thailand, a concoction of turmeric root has been clinically shown to create a strong resilience against the venom of the king cobra when ingested. Proper and immediate treatments are critical to avoid death. Successful precedents include a client who recovered and was discharged in 10 days after being treated by accurate antivenom and inpatient care.

Not all king cobra bites result in envenomation, but they are often considered for medical importance. Clinical mortality rates vary between different regions and depend on many factors, such as local medical advancement. A Thai survey reports 10 deaths out of 35 patients received for king cobra bites, whose fatality rate posed (28%) is higher than those of other cobra species. The Department of Clinical Toxinology of the University of Adelaide gives this serpent a general untreated fatality rate of 50–60%, implying that the snake has about a half chance to deliver bites involving nonfatal quantities of venom.

Snake venom is a highly toxic saliva containing zootoxins that facilitates in the immobilization and digestion of prey. This also provides defense against threats. Snake venom is injected by unique fangs during a bite, whereas some species are also able to spit venom.

The glands that secrete zootoxins are a modification of the parotid salivary glands found in other vertebrates and are usually located on each side of the head, below and behind the eye, and enclosed in a muscular sheath. The venom is stored in large glands called alveoli in which it’s stored before being conveyed by a duct to the base of channeled or tubular fangs through which it’s ejected.

Venom contains more than 20 different compounds, which are mostly proteins and polypeptides. The complex mixture of proteins, enzymes, and various other substances has toxic and lethal properties. Venom serves to immobilize prey. Enzymes in venom play an important role in the digestion of prey, and various other substances are responsible for important but non-lethal biological effects. Some of the proteins in snake venom have very specific effects on various biological functions, including blood coagulation, blood pressure regulation, and transmission of nerve or muscle impulses. These venoms have been studied and developed for use as pharmacological or diagnostic tools, and even drugs.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage is a 2021 American superhero film featuring the Marvel Comics character Venom, produced by Columbia Pictures in association with Marvel. Distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing, it is the second film in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe and the sequel to Venom (2018). The film was directed by Andy Serkis from a screenplay by Kelly Marcel, based on a story she wrote with Tom Hardy, who stars as Eddie Brock and Venom alongside Michelle Williams, Naomie Harris, Reid Scott, Stephen Graham, and Woody Harrelson. In the film, Brock and the alien symbiote Venom must face serial killer Cletus Kasady (Harrelson) after he becomes the host of an offshoot of Venom named Carnage.

Venom was intended by Sony to be the start of a new shared universe, and plans for a sequel began during production on the first film. Harrelson was cast to make a brief appearance as Kasady at the end of Venom, with the intention of him becoming the villain Carnage in the sequel. Official work on the sequel began in January 2019, with Hardy and Harrelson confirmed to return along with Marcel as writer. Serkis was hired as director that August, partly due to his experience working with CGI and motion capture technology, which was an important part of portraying Venom and Carnage in the film. Filming took place at Leavesden Studios in England from November 2019 to February 2020, with additional filming in San Francisco in February. The title was announced in April 2020.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage premiered in London on September 14, 2021, and was theatrically released in the United States on October 1. It was delayed from an initial October 2020 date due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The film grossed $502 million worldwide, making it the seventh-highest-grossing film of 2021, and received mixed reviews from critics, although it was generally considered an improvement over its predecessor. A third Venom film is in development.

PLOT SUMMARY

In 1996, a young Cletus Kasady watches helplessly as his lover, Frances Barrison, is taken away from St. Estes Home for Unwanted Children to the Ravencroft Institute. On the way, Barrison uses her sonic scream powers to attack young police officer Patrick Mulligan. Mulligan shoots Barrison in the eye and suffers an injury to his ear due to her scream. Unbeknownst to Mulligan, who believes he killed her, Barrison is still taken to Ravencroft where her abilities are restricted.

In the present day, Mulligan is now a detective and asks journalist Eddie Brock to speak to serial killer Kasady in San Quentin State Prison, as Kasady refuses to talk to anyone other than Brock. After the visit, Brock’s alien symbiote Venom deduces where Kasady has hidden the bodies of his victims, which gives Brock a huge career boost. Brock is then contacted by his ex-fiancée Anne Weying, who tells him that she is now engaged to Dr. Dan Lewis, to Venom’s displeasure. Kasady, who has been found guilty of his crimes and sentenced to death by lethal injection, invites Brock to attend his execution. Brock speaks with Kasady, who insults Brock, provoking Venom to attack Kasady. Kasady bites Brock’s hand and ingests a small part of the symbiote. Back at their home, Venom has an argument with Brock about wanting to have more freedom to eat criminals, and the symbiote decides to leave Brock’s body and go off on its own.

As Kasady’s execution begins, a red symbiote emerges and blocks the injection. Named Carnage, it goes on a violent rampage through the prison, freeing inmates and killing guards. Carnage agrees to help Kasady break Barrison out of Ravencroft in exchange for Kasady’s help eliminating Brock and Venom. Mulligan visits Brock at home and warns him about the situation. At Ravencroft, Kasady frees Barrison and they travel to the St. Estes children’s home to burn it down. Mulligan grows suspicious of Brock and arrests him. Brock contacts Weying as his lawyer and reveals that Venom has separated from him. As Venom makes his way through San Francisco by hopping from body to body, Weying finds him bonded to Mrs. Chen and convinces him to forgive Brock. Venom reunites with Brock and they escape custody. Kasady takes Mulligan hostage and Barrison captures Weying, taking them both to a cathedral where Kasady and Barrison plan to get married.

Brock and Venom arrive to fight Carnage while Barrison seemingly kills Mulligan by hanging him with a chain. Venom is overpowered by Carnage, but provokes Barrison into using her powers to separate Carnage and Kasady. Venom devours Carnage and kills Kasady while Barrison is crushed by the collapsing cathedral. Later, an alive Mulligan’s eyes flash blue. Brock and Venom, now fugitives, decide to take a vacation while they ponder their next steps. As Venom tells Brock about the symbiotes’ knowledge of other universes, a blinding light transports them from their hotel room to another room where they watch J. Jonah Jameson talking about Spider-Man’s revealed identity as Peter Parker on television.

This is also the first time we’re hearing about the title for the Andy Serkis directed sequel. The news comes in the wake of Warner Bros. announcing yesterday that their Matt Reeves’ The Batman is no longer opening on June 25 date next year, but Oct. 1, 2021. Venom: Let There Be Carnage is the only wide entry currently scheduled on its new date.

Under Rothman’s leadership, the Motion Picture Group was returned to strong profitability and experienced several of its most profitable years in history. Driven by tentpoles such as Spider-Man: Far From Home, Jumanji: The Next Level and Bad Boys For Life, fiscal year 2020 (April 2019 through March 2020) was the film studio’s best in over a decade in terms of both ultimate profitability and operating income.

Previously, he was chairman and chief executive officer of Fox Filmed Entertainment with Jim Gianopulos until his resignation on September 14, 2012, effective January 1, 2013. Rothman began at Fox in 1994 as the founder and President of Fox Searchlight Pictures and served the company for 18 years. During Rothman’s tenure, Fox films were nominated for over 150 Oscars and won three Best Picture Awards. The company also earned over $30 billion in the box office and made the then two highest-grossing films, Titanic and Avatar. • In 1986, Rothman co-produced Jim Jarmusch’s Down by Law and Robert Frank’s Candy Mountain.

• In 1987, Tom Rothman began working as an Executive Vice President of Columbia Pictures on all aspects of film development and production.

• In 1989, he served as president of Worldwide Production for the Samuel Goldwyn Company. He supervised landmark independent films such as Henry V, Much Ado About Nothing, Longtime Companion, Truly Madly Deeply, Wild At Heart, and The Madness of King George. He discovered and championed numerous young filmmakers who went on to become successful, including Ang Lee, Anthony Minghella, and Kenneth Branagh. During this time, the company’s films won the Palme d’Or at Cannes three times.

• For 18 years, Rothman worked at Fox Filmed Entertainment.

• In 1994, Rothman founded and was the first President of Searchlight Pictures, one of the first specialty film divisions linked to a major studio. Fox Searchlight went on to distribute multiple Oscar-winning films, including Slumdog Millionaire, which won the Best Picture Oscar in 2008. Rothman accepted that Oscar on behalf of British producer Christian Colson, who could not attend the 81st Academy Awards ceremony.

• From 1996 to 1998, Rothman was president of production for Twentieth Century Fox where he oversaw the majority of the company’s film development and production.

• From 1998 to 2000, Rothman was president of Twentieth Century Fox Film Group.

• From 2000 to 2012, Tom Rothman was chairman and CEO of Fox Filmed Entertainment (FFE). FFE includes 20th Century Fox, Fox Searchlight Pictures, Blue Sky Animation, and Twentieth Century Fox Television. During this time, the studio was nominated for over 150 Academy Awards, won three Best Picture Oscars, earned over $30 billion in worldwide box office sales. • As Fox Chairman, he is infamously also known for rejecting the idea behind Deadpool, claiming it wouldn’t be successful, and making the decision to have the character (whose nickname is “The Merc With a Mouth”) have his mouth sewn shut for the majority of his first film appearance in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

• In September 2012, Tom Rothman resigned as chairman and chief executive of Fox Filmed Entertainment. That same month, Steven Spielberg announced that Rothman would produce Spielberg’s Robopocalypse, for DreamWorks.

• In 2012, he was appointed as a director of Priceline.com Inc.

• In 2013, Sundance Film Festival named Rothman to its U.S. Dramatic Jury, and he presented the Grand Jury prize to Fruitvale Station. He is also responsible for the re-launch of the Tristar Productions studio.

• In February 2015, it was announced that Rothman would replace Amy Pascal as chairman of Sony Pictures’ Motion Picture Group. Rothman continues to oversee the properties he greenlit at TriStar.

History

The Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group was launched in 1998 as the Columbia TriStar Motion Picture Group, as a current division of Sony Pictures Entertainment, owned by Sony. It also has many of Sony Picture’s current motion picture divisions as part of it. Its divisions at that time were Columbia Pictures, TriStar Pictures, Triumph Films, Sony Pictures Classics, and Sony Pictures Releasing.

On December 8, 1998, SPE resurrected its former animation and television division Screen Gems as a film division of Sony Pictures Entertainment’s Columbia TriStar Motion Picture Group that has served several different purposes for its parent companies over the decades since its incorporation.

In 2002, Columbia TriStar Television was renamed as Sony Pictures Television. The last three remaining companies, with the “Columbia TriStar” brand in its name, were Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment, the Columbia TriStar Motion Picture Group, and Columbia TriStar Marketing Group. Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment and Columbia TriStar Film Distributors became Sony Pictures Home Entertainment and Sony Pictures Releasing International in 2004 and 2005 and Columbia TriStar Motion Picture Group became the second-to-last subsidiary of Sony Pictures Entertainment to use the “Columbia TriStar” brand name in its name.

In 2013, TriStar Productions was launched, as a joint venture of Sony Pictures Entertainment and former 20th Century Fox chairman Thomas Rothman.

In October 2013, Sony Pictures renamed its motion picture group as the “Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group”. Sony Pictures Animation and Sony Pictures Imageworks were moved from Sony Pictures Digital to its motion picture group.

On June 2, 2016, Doug Belgrad had announced he was to step down as president of the SPMPG and would transition his role to producer at the studio. Belgrad was promoted as president of the SPMPG back in 2014.

On July 15, 2019, former Fox 2000 Pictures president Elizabeth Gabler and the entire Fox 2000 staff joined Sony Pictures Entertainment and formed 3000 Pictures with the motion picture group. HarperCollins would be funding half of the division’s overhead and development. 3000 Pictures would also pursue projects for TV and streaming.

The Snap, also known as the Blip, was the moment Thanos snapped his fingers while using the Infinity Gauntlet during the Infinity War and caused the extermination of half of all life in the universe. Wanting to restore balance to the universe, by averting universal resource conflicts due to overpopulation, Thanos embarked on a quest to assemble all six Infinity Stones needed to achieve this goal. In 2018, during the Battle of Wakanda, Thanos activated the completed gauntlet and initiated the Snap, causing a universal genocide which eliminated fifty percent of all life, randomly disintegrating individuals into dust.

The Snap had devastating universal repercussions. On Earth, the Snap led to a five-year period in which the world fell into societal collapse and many countries followed a one-world government. Major cities across the world, such as San Francisco and New York City, fell victim to disenfranchisement. In 2023, the victims of the Snap were resurrected by the Avengers, after they went back in time to collect the Infinity Stones.

Earth

On Earth, there were at least 3,797,000,000 humans confirmed deceased or missing worldwide, according to a statistical report issued by the United Nations in conjunction with the World Bank. All types of life forms perished in the Snap, including the bacteria in the bodies of the Snap survivors.

The COVID-19 pandemic, also known as the coronavirus pandemic, is an ongoing global pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The novel virus was first identified in an outbreak in the Chinese city of Wuhan in December 2019. Attempts to contain it there failed, allowing the virus to spread to other areas of Asia and later worldwide. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the outbreak a public health emergency of international concern on 30 January 2020, and a pandemic on 11 March 2020. As of 14 January 2023, the pandemic had caused more than 666 million cases and 6.72 million confirmed deaths, making it one of the deadliest in history.

COVID-19 symptoms range from undetectable to deadly, but most commonly include fever, dry cough, and fatigue. Severe illness is more likely in elderly patients and those with certain underlying medical conditions. COVID-19 transmits when people breathe in air contaminated by droplets and small airborne particles containing the virus. The risk of breathing these in is highest when people are in close proximity, but they can be inhaled over longer distances, particularly indoors. Transmission can also occur if contaminated fluids reach the eyes, nose, or mouth, or, more rarely, via contaminated surfaces. Infected individuals are typically contagious for 10 days and can spread the virus even if they do not develop symptoms. Mutations have produced many strains (variants) with varying degrees of infectivity and virulence.

The COVID-19 vaccines have been approved and widely distributed in various countries since December 2020. According to a June 2022 study, COVID-19 vaccines prevented an additional 14.4 million to 19.8 million deaths in 185 countries and territories from 8 December 2020, to 8 December 2021. Other recommended preventive measures include social distancing, wearing masks, improving ventilation and air filtration, and quarantining those who have been exposed or are infected. Treatments include novel antiviral drugs and symptom control. Public health mitigation measures include travel restrictions, lockdowns, business restrictions and closures, workplace hazard controls, quarantines, testing systems, and contact tracing of the infected, which, together with treatments, serve to bring about the control and eventual end of the pandemic.

The pandemic has triggered severe social and economic disruption around the world, including the largest global recession since the Great Depression. Widespread supply shortages, including food shortages, were caused by supply chain disruptions. Reduced human activity saw an unprecedented decrease in pollution. Educational institutions and public areas were partially or fully closed in many jurisdictions, and many events were cancelled or postponed during 2020 and 2021. Misinformation has circulated through social media and mass media, and political tensions have intensified. The pandemic has raised issues of racial and geographic discrimination, health equity, and the balance between public health imperatives and individual rights.

While the WHO considers the pandemic active as of October 2022, some countries are transitioning their public health approach towards regarding SARS-CoV-2 as an endemic virus.

A COVID 19 vaccine is a vaccine intended to provide acquired immunity against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS CoV 2), the virus that causes coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID 19).

Prior to the COVID 19 pandemic, an established body of knowledge existed about the structure and function of coronaviruses causing diseases like severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS). However, immunity from the vaccines has been found to wane over time, requiring people to get booster doses of the vaccine to maintain immunity against COVID 19.

The COVID 19 vaccines are widely credited for their role in reducing the spread of COVID 19 and reducing the severity and death caused by COVID 19. According to a June 2022 study, COVID 19 vaccines prevented an additional 14.4 to 19.8 million deaths in 185 countries and territories from 8 December 2020 to 8 December 2021. Many countries implemented phased distribution plans that prioritized those at highest risk of complications, such as the elderly, and those at high risk of exposure and transmission, such as healthcare workers.

Common side effects of COVID 19 vaccines include soreness, redness, rash, inflammation at the injection site, fatigue, headache, myalgia (muscle pain), and arthralgia (joint pain), which resolve without medical treatment within a few days. COVID-19 vaccination is safe for people who are breastfeeding.

As of 27 December 2022, 13.16 billion doses of COVID 19 vaccines have been administered worldwide based on official reports from national public health agencies. By December 2020, more than 10 billion vaccine doses had been preordered by countries, with about half of the doses purchased by high-income countries comprising 14% of the world’s population. Despite the extremely rapid development of effective mRNA and viral vector vaccines, worldwide vaccine equity has not been achieved. The development and use of whole inactivated virus (WIV) and protein-based vaccines have also been recommended, especially for use in developing countries. The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has now authorized bivalent vaccines to protect against the original COVID-19 strain and its Omicron variant.

Thanos is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. He was created by writer-artist Jim Starlin, and made his first appearance in The Invincible Iron Man #55 (cover dated February 1973). An Eternal–Deviant warlord from the moon Titan, Thanos is regarded as one of the most powerful beings in the Marvel Universe. He has clashed with many heroes including the Avengers, the Guardians of the Galaxy, the Fantastic Four, and the X-Men.

While usually portrayed as an evil-bent villain, many stories have alternatively depicted Thanos as having a twisted moral compass and thinking of his actions as justified. The character’s perhaps best-known role came in the 1991 storyline The Infinity Gauntlet, the culmination of several previous story arcs, which saw him successfully assembling the six Infinity Gems into a single gauntlet and using them to kill half of the universe’s population, including many of its heroes, in an effort to earn the affection of Mistress Death, the living embodiment of death in the Marvel Universe. Although these events were later undone, the storyline has remained one of the most popular published by Marvel.

Debuting in the Bronze Age of comic books, the character has appeared in almost five decades of Marvel publications, as well as many media adaptations, including animated television series and video games. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Thanos was portrayed by Damion Poitier in The Avengers (2012) and by Josh Brolin in Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), and Avengers: Endgame (2019) through voice and motion capture.

Wanting to restore balance to the universe, by averting universal resource conflicts due to overpopulation, Thanos embarked on a quest to assemble all six Infinity Stones needed to achieve this goal. In 2018, during the Battle of Wakanda, Thanos activated the completed gauntlet and initiated the Snap, causing a universal genocide which eliminated fifty percent of all life, randomly disintegrating individuals into dust.

The Snap had devastating universal repercussions. On Earth, the Snap led to a five-year period in which the world fell into societal collapse and many countries followed a one-world government. Major cities across the world, such as San Francisco and New York City, fell victim to disenfranchisement. In 2023, the victims of the Snap were resurrected by the Avengers, after they went back in time to collect the Infinity Stones.

Earth

On Earth, there were at least 3,797,000,000 humans confirmed deceased or missing worldwide, according to a statistical report issued by the United Nations in conjunction with the World Bank. All types of life forms perished in the Snap, including the bacteria in the bodies of the Snap survivors.

In Greek mythology, Thanatos ( “Death”, from “(I) die, am dying”) was the personification of death. He was a minor figure in Greek mythology, often referred to but rarely appearing in person.

In myth and poetry

The Greek poet Hesiod established in his Theogony that Thánatos is a son of Nyx (Night) and Erebos (Darkness) and twin of Hypnos (Sleep).

The god’s character is established by Hesiod in the following passage of the Theogony:

And there the children of dark Night have their dwellings, Sleep and Death, awful gods. The glowing Sun never looks upon them with his beams, neither as he goes up into heaven, nor as he comes down from heaven. Thanatos was thus regarded as merciless and indiscriminate, hated by – and hateful towards — mortals and gods alike. But in myths which feature him, Thanatos could occasionally be outwitted, a feat that the sly King Sisyphus of Korinth twice accomplished. When it came time for Sisyphus to die, Zeus ordered Thanatos to chain Sisyphus up in Tartarus. Sisyphus cheated death by tricking Thanatos into his own shackles, thereby preventing the demise of any mortal while Thanatos was so enchained.

In psychology and medicine

According to Sigmund Freud, humans have a life instinct—which he named “Eros”—and a death drive, which is commonly called (though not by Freud himself) “Thanatos”. This postulated death drive allegedly compels humans to engage in risky and self-destructive acts that could lead to their own death. Behaviors such as thrill seeking and aggression are viewed as actions which stem from this Thanatos instinct.

Euthanasia, “good death” in Greek, is the act or practice of ending the life of an individual who would otherwise experience severe, incurable suffering or disability. It typically involves lethal injection or the suspension of extraordinary medical treatment. Doctor Jack Kevorkian named his euthanasia device the Thanatron.

Despite the extremely rapid development of effective mRNA and viral vector vaccines, worldwide vaccine equity has not been achieved. The development and use of whole inactivated virus (WIV) and protein-based vaccines have also been recommended, especially for use in developing countries. The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has now authorized bivalent vaccines to protect against the original COVID-19 strain and its Omicron variant.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is the national public health agency of the United States. It is a United States federal agency, under the Department of Health and Human Services, and is headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia.

The agency’s main goal is the protection of public health and safety through the control and prevention of disease, injury, and disability in the US and worldwide. The CDC focuses national attention on developing and applying disease control and prevention. It especially focuses its attention on infectious disease, food borne pathogens, environmental health, occupational safety and health, health promotion, injury prevention and educational activities designed to improve the health of United States citizens. The CDC also conducts research and provides information on non-infectious diseases, such as obesity and diabetes, and is a founding member of the International Association of National Public Health Institutes.

The Director of the CDC is Rochelle Walensky (as of 2022). The Director reports to the United States Secretary of Health and Human Services. Since 2020, the CDC has faced scrutiny for its handing of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2022, following an internal examination, Walensky acknowledged “some pretty dramatic, pretty public mistakes, from testing to data to communications” and called for a reorganization of the CDC.

Recent history

On August 17, 2022, Dr. Walensky said the CDC would make drastic changes in the wake of mistakes during the COVID-19 pandemic. She outlined an overhaul of how the CDC would analyze and share data and how they would communicate information to the general public. In her statement to all CDC employees, she said: “For 75 years, CDC and public health have been preparing for COVID-19, and in our big moment, our performance did not reliably meet expectations.” Based on the findings of an internal report, Walensky concluded that “The C.D.C. must refocus itself on public health needs, respond much faster to emergencies and outbreaks of disease, and provide information in a way that ordinary people and state and local health authorities can understand and put to use” (as summarized by the New York Times).

The first person to receive a COVID-19 vaccine in the U.S. on Monday put a sticker on her scrubs afterward that said, “Crushing COVID-19, got my vaccine,” according to ABC News.

Sandra Lindsay, a critical care nurse at Northwell Health Hospital in New York, said she felt hopeful when she received the vaccine. The CDC hopes Americans will feel the same way — and that they’ll be willing to publicize coronavirus vaccines to others.

The CDC has released a template for health care facilities to create orange-and-white stickers and buttons that say, “I got my COVID-19 vaccine!” Doctors and nurses could hand out the “swag” after patients receive their shots, similar to “I Voted” stickers offered on Election Day.

“We’re very influenced by what we perceive people in our community to be doing, so if everybody else is doing something, it’s attractive to us,” Katherine Milkman, PhD, co-director of the Behavior Change for Good Initiative, told ABC News.

Public health officials and health care companies are looking for different ways to address vaccine hesitancy and remind people to get their second doses of the vaccine when it’s time. Milkman and colleagues at the University of Pennsylvania, for instance, are studying ways to increase vaccine rates, including text reminders, reserved appointments, and other treats such as ice cream.

“We think ‘I got vaccinated’ could be the new ‘I voted’ — at least until the pandemic is over — and we’re exploring the ideas as one of many ways to encourage others to get vaccinated,” a CVS spokesperson told the news outlet.

The efforts may seem simplistic, but they’re a first step to remind people. Health care organizations also need to address more complex questions about vaccine safety, efficacy, and side effects.

On a personal level, health care providers will have to talk with patients to understand their concerns and discuss the pros and cons of taking a COVID-19 vaccine. As part of its vaccine communication toolkit, the CDC released posters, slide presentations, social media messages, and fact sheets to help health care staff talk to patients.

“When it comes to the specifics of vaccine concerns, you’re not going to address them effectively with mass media campaigns,” Dan Salmon, PhD, an epidemiologist at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, told ABC News.

“You have to make sure you don’t do more harm than good,” he said.
